My toast to Rush Limbaugh makes it to print
it's a few weeks late, but it made it in.

A Toast To Rush
While this may sound unusual, I feel it is important that, as a Democrat, I thank Rush Limbaugh. I feel he was a key in helping the Democrats regain control of the Senate. While I normally ignore Rush’s hate-filled fibs and falsehoods, his ridicule of poor Michael J. Fox certainly helped swing the Missouri senate race to the Democrats. Polling indicated that it swung a good three points our way after Rush pulled his stunt, and Democrat Claire McCaskill ended up winning by about one point. Rush’s mean-spirited mocking created a lot of sympathetic publicity for Michael J. Fox and his cause. It backfired on Limbaugh, partly because of hypocrisy, as Fox had run a similar ad for a Republican candidate that Rush seemingly had no problem with it at that time. So, when I hear Barbara Boxer grilling Alberto Gonzalez, or Bernie Sanders cross-examining Halliburton executives, I will raise a glass to toast Rush.

1. Well done. Rush needs to be ridiculed out of existence.
Every hyperbole from his drug addled ranting needs to be met derisive laughter.

12. Thanks - did you see my post on my Freeper call?
Somebody called me up a little after 10pm on Sunday night, asked if I was the one that wrote the letter in the newspaper, to which I said, "yes" and then they asked me if I wanted to know "the real Jim Webb" - to which I responded that I didn't want to hear that at such a late time & hung up.

15. You got a call, too, as a result of LTTE?
Don't you find it kind of scary -- that someone would hunt you down, find your phone number, and call as a result of something you printed in the paper?

That happened to me after my LTTE on Social Security privatization appeared in the local paper. Some guy called me as a result of that LTTE to tell me how great privatization would be -- I found it a little bit scary even though the guy did not seem crazy or anything. I didn't answer the phone, but when he started leaving a long-winded message on my answering machine, I pulled the phone line out of the wall to disconnect the call. He then called back, picking up where he left off. Rather weird, I thought.

Anyway, great letter! You do great work! We need people like you educating the masses.

18. Yes, I did get a call
Edited on Tue Dec-05-06 10:16 AM by NewJeffCT
The person sounded fairly reasonable and even apologized for calling so late, but then wanted to know if I knew the real Jim Webb... It was almost like one of those RNC robo-calls that initially sounded like they were from the Democratic candidate.

It was a bit scary, but I'm not going to be intimidated by them. most of them are all talk & no action.

24. It was strange
I've written much more strongly worded letters that got published, but never got a call about them.

Maybe they're just angry at Macaca Allen losing?

26. You know, I'll sound nuts,
and maybe it's too much message board in my life (lol), but I often find myself replying in my head to a letter... and thinking I'd like to respond.

Of course, I'd never pick up the phone. But I wonder if it doesn't signal what may be at heart a good sign -- a desire for community and communication in a more isolated society?

Or maybe I'm just a sap.

You are partially responsible for GOP LOSSES last month.

Making fun of someone with avery horrible disease shows what an ignorant and disgusting fool you really are.

But you're too stupid to realize it.

13. Nice.

I realize we are all responsible for our own actions & choices, but I put a considerable amount of blame on Limbaugh for the horrid changes in my mother since she started listening to him in the early 90s. She had just gone through a nasty divorce (mostly her fault) & serious health crisis (not at all her fault) & while trying to regain control of her life, she began to listen to this fat-ass windbag. In a period of about 2 years she went from a kind hearted, generous, open minded woman to a mean spirited, hateful, racist person, that to this day, I hardly recognize as the woman who raised me.

25. That is scary. I wonder if she can be brought back by listening to Thom Hartmann
or some other intelligent progressive radio host? Maybe all she needs is the radio voice, and a kinder one would do just as well. He definitely caught her at a vulnerable point, like a cult.

17. When is Rush going to learn
that it's just better for him not to talk about drugs? He still uses "drug-addict" as an insult. I haven't listened to his show in a long time, but I'll bet he still uses "thrice-divorced" as an insult as well.

21. Lucky for you guys
We're still stuck with Lieberman here in CT.

I'm hoping we can boot him from the party after the 2008 elections, when we hopefully pick up at least 2 seats in the Senate.

20. I used to write a political column...
Edited on Tue Dec-05-06 11:22 AM by TwoSparkles
...and one of my first columns was titled, "Rush Limbaugh A Democrat's Best Friend".

The tone and message was similar to your well-written editorial.

Rush's hatemongering, lying and screeching may be entertaining to ingrates
who need their politics served up as easily digestible, ranting sound bytes
from the sewer.

However, Rush's embarrassing shtick will eventually be mocked and viewed
as an abomination. He peaked a long time ago, and his ratings continue to
slide.

In the long run--Rush's perversity will serve the Democrats. We have years
of Rush's repulsive soundbytes that will be used against him and the Republicans
who made the mistake of appearing on his Rush's show (Cheney, Bush, DeLay, Lott,
Frist, etc).

There are thousands of Rushisms that will fuel his demise. My favorite is
his "Club Gitmo" Gear. He peddles caps, t-shirts and mugs that make light of
the fact that our country is torturing innocent people in settings that are
precursors to concentration-camp circumstances. When Gitmo is dismantled
and the truth is revealed--and our country later apologizes for these dark times--
Rush's sick actions and attitude will fall over the cliff with the rest of
this unAmerican, revolting parade of fools.

Salud! I toast to Rush also. Great piece. :)

It's inevitable. Remember Iran-Contra, Newt shutting down the goverment...add your own. This might have been a new low, though.
