INDIA 2.0: INFOSYS
Outsourcing giant Infosys believes it is the new model for global businesses

Tens of thousands of employees work at the 80-acre Infosys campus in Bangalore, India - a corporate world away from pockets of poverty outside its gates.

BANGALORE, India - First came orientation at the Hyatt Regency in Burlingame -- name tags for all, a buffet of pasta, sushi and apple pie, the quick rundown on company goals and ethics. Then the recruits prepared to climb aboard three jet airliners for the 30-hour journey to Bangalore, headquarters of their new employer, Infosys Technologies.

``I'm nervous about the flight and I don't know what to expect there -- the weather, the culture, working,'' said Nicole Dun, a 22-year-old San Franciscan embarking on a six-month intensive company training program before being redeployed in the United States. ``Business is global now.''

The summer hiring of 126 young Americans was a validation of sorts for the outsourcing giant, a company that for some in the United States has been synonymous with offshoring and lost jobs.

``If young people in America look at us as a career opportunity, we have succeeded,'' said Infosys board member T.V. Mohandas Pai, who until recently was chief financial officer.

Infosys is the India success story in microcosm: It's perhaps the first classic Silicon Valley type of start-up to sprout from a handful of engineers and $250, not old wealth, and is now riding the outsourcing boom that is sweeping the globe. Its success makes individual Indians believe they can create companies that propel their country into a technological powerhouse that rivals the valley and the United States.

Some in the United States, though, still see India as the help desk of the world -- think software writers -- whose only advantage is its cheaper-faster business model. They say Infosys lacks the innovative spirit of Silicon Valley.
