City orders that cookie-scented strips in bus shelters be removed

(12-05) 12:43 PST SAN FRANCISCO -- City officials in San Francisco have ordered the immediate removal of cookie-scented strips from bus shelters -- one day after they went in as part of a marketing campaign to promote milk.

The demand was made to CBS Outdoor, the company that holds the advertising contract for the city's bus shelters, late Monday night.

The company was asked by the Municipal Transportation Agency, which runs the city's public transit system and has jurisdiction over the bus shelters, to remove the scented strips today, said Steve Shinn, a vice president of the company.

The move came amid public concern over potential allergic reactions to scented products.

1. Good
Its enough that advertisers invade our aural and visual space - but to then invade our olfactory senses....that's too much.

2. I thought it was a weird way to promote milk consumption
anyway. The only thing the smell of cookies would make ME want to consume would be............COOKIES! The whole idea is just plain evil. Diet sabotage!

9. Scent allergies are pretty common.
I'm allergic to certain smells. I'm not bad compared to some people, but even a little bit of exposure can give me a blinding headache.

10. Weird.
I don't think I know anyone who has scent allergies (not that I'm doubting you) but I know several who get sick if they have milk.

4. Bravo!
We should not be assaulted with artificial scents at a bus stop, train station, or other confined space. Now if we could only get people to stop wearing too much perfume or cologne!

6. Now if only my SF employer were so forward thinking
I suffer painful headaches and breathing difficulty when I'm around strong perfumes, and have asked that the company simply inform the office that some employees are sensitive to perfume, and to please be considerate and conservative in its use. They have refused, saying that this is my problem, and sending out such a notice would offend perfume wearers.

12. Remember the radio employee who sued?

She repeatedly told a co-worker that her fragrance was
literally making her ill to no avail. Then she went to her
bosses. They did nothing. Then she sued and won.

Offending someone is not as bad as letting
someone else get sick, or worse, die.

11. Synthetic Fragrance = Asthma Attacks...

in many people including me. It's the #1 trigger for me.
Parents with asthatic kids should NOT wear fragrance,
buy soap, shampoos, deodorant, candles, plug-ins, etc.
that contain synthetic fragrance. In fact, even non-asthmatics
are often affected negatively by this (headaches, nausia...).

13. lol's....CNBC was promoting the Marketing Company Big Time yesterday
and I'm sure if they were "public" folks rushed out to buy their stock.

Not first time Marketing Campaign ran amok....It didn't sound that bad though. Rather smell "chocolate chip cookies" at a bus stop than diesel fumes. But...who knows. It just didn't work out for those sharp shooters marketers.
