2. "An Inconvenient Truth" was finally on the shelf of the video store
yesterday morning, so I did manage to see it. I expected to be bored silly since I knew most of what he was going to discuss, being an avid science reader. I was pleasantly surprised. The film held my attention for the duration, not an easy thing to do, especially when the basic format is a lecture with graphics.

If you haven't seen it yet, see it. You won't be bored and it organizes all the information out there into a coherent whole.

7. Gore just took a stab at W
referencing the effect of Katrina, that it was forecasted that a hurricane of that size, could hit NO, and that the levy's were to weak to take the storm damage, but was ignored....

Going into a lot of points of the movie, Gore is doing very well...

9. There is a talking head on
saying Gore and the Global warming issue is highly over blown...and saying ice is gaining in some areas...he is also saying Gore wants us to be afraid...

Saying the issue isn't something to be afraid of...

Gore talking now...

We have organizations that put out studies, that tell us to put out as much pollution as possible, a biased study....

Consensus of experts says Global warming is a real issue, and should be addressed as soon as possible...

Five things, to slow down global warming, that normal folk can do...

Commerical break....

10. Green shopping..
Edited on Tue Dec-05-06 05:50 PM by petersond
Five simple things to buy, easy to install, and use and save cash...

1. fluorescent bulbs...if every household switched light bulbs...equivalent of taking 1 million cars off the road(personally, i can vouch for this, although those bulbs cost a bit more, every single light in my home has those fluorescent bulbs, and I noticed a 15 dollar change in our regular electric bills...)

2. solar lightning....

3. programmable thermostats...a difference of 2 degree's could help a lot...

4. air filters, change them regularly...can knock out 2percent of co2...

5. thermal blanket, for your hot water heater, cuts 4 and a half percent of co2

Look for energy star label...its a symbol that you are getting an environmentally sound appliance...

on edit:spelling

Gore encourages that the US has to change its policies, and the other countries will follow our lead....

He is at Lowe's...can save money

11. wrapping up the show
audience is talking a bit now, about how the slide show changed their minds...audience member, saying seeing the images is scary...

Gore is talking...saying debate on Global Warming is over, the consensus among the experts is astounding, especially for the scientific community...retalking some temp/storm patterens...

Why the skeptics so, skeptical...some of the largest polluters are putting out biased reports...like oil, coal companies...reminds Gore of the big tobaccoo issue....

Those studies, delayed hearing the warning sounds/bells...

Commercial again....

22. True
And it boggles my mind how people can doubt it anymore. Last August, in my hometown in SE Alaska, it was over 90 degrees...yes, over 90 degrees in Alaska, Alaska for pete's sake! It blows me away...while growing up, we never came close to 90...damn, 80 was hot to me!

I notice a lot of changes here in SW Missouri, but this part of the country experiences some weird/fast changing weather patterns, and its hard to pin point if anything is changing...but from my father/mother in law standpoints, the weather the past three years has been really odd...they note the heat, which has been well over 100 the past three summers, and the lack of rain...we were roughly 19 inches short of average last year, and we are 19 inches short this year....and my inlaws say that the lack of rain in two consecutive years, is a first for them....

27. What I don't get about those who deny GW, is this. Even if Gore is wrong, but we make the changes
he suggests, how does that hurt? I mean, if Global warming isn't causing the environmental changes (yet) claimed, making the small changes outlined by Gore isn't going to inconvenience anyone, right? And if global warming is true, then these changes just might save our planet. It's a win win imho.

29. Good point
just the five things Gore mentioned, during the buy green portion of the show save money, all the way around...and saving money is a good thing, I think! Especially on your power bill....I noticed the light bulb difference right away...I got them this past February, and during the winter months, our electric bill is around 50 bucks even....after replacing all the bulbs in our home, our next two bills were 34 bucks(a piece) and change...I was shocked, I thought the power company made a mistake....

Like you mentioned, its a win win...

32. Its worth it
but check out a warehouse store, like Cost-co for example, I got 8 bulbs for 13 bucks, for the 60 watters, and I spent 15 for 6, 100 watt bulbs...getting them at say Target, or smaller store, they are usually very expensive, like 6-7 bucks for two 60 watt ones, and 10 bucks for 2 100 watters...so, do a little price checking first...:D

At first I was skeptical, and in truth, I got them because I got tired of having the cheapo light bulbs burn out on me...I would be replacing bulbs two, three times a week...and I figured, that those fluorescents will last longer, so I invested...realizing that it saved me money didn't occur to me until I got our electric bill in....:D

39. Even industry is making changes
Any homeowner or business can save money by saving energy and resources. Some, like DuPont, have saved millions. It can also offer a great financial advantage over less conscientious competitors. A great book about this is Natural Capitalism by Amory and Hunter Lovins and Paul Hawken.

He does a wonderful job, Oprah is absolutely supportive, and the audience comes off as very receptive to, and supportive of, Gore and his message.

I am really rather ambivalent about Oprah: on the one hand she comes off as self-centered egoistic shill for materialism -- on the other hand, when she gets behind a noble effort (such as global warming, women's rights in the Third World, environmentalism and the like), she really makes good use of her personal power as an educator and opinion shaper.

On balance, I must admit that I have come to really appreciate her -- even though some of what she does with her show just drives me up a wall. In any case, I couldn't help but be enormously pleased and impressed that she devoted a whole hour to letting Gore speak out, with her full backing and support of what he had to say. She constantly brought up that she had watched "An Inconvenient Truth" and was urging EVERYBODY to see it. So, brava to her for that.

31. I will watch it too, though lately, I have soured on Oprah myself.
It's been a long time coming but her show with Bill O'Lielly was the final nail in the coffin. I just can't take her contradictions anymore since I agree with you that, on the one hand, Oprah is a "self-centered egoistic shill for materialism" while "on the other hand, when she gets behind a noble effort....she really makes good use of her personal power as an educator and opinion shaper".

Too bad some of her efforts are misdirected as seen with Obama and O'Lielly.

But what Gore has to say really matters to me, so I will watch her show today.

33. I had never watched her at all until about 3 years ago.
I have always been SO not into celebrities and talk shows -- not to mention TV in general. But when her show started being shown at 4pm on my local CBS affiliate -- about the time I get home from work -- I ended up turning it on once in awhile while waiting for the evening news to start.

While I consider many of her shows to be largely shallow and idiotic, many of them are truly outstanding, so I now check in regularily to see what's she up to. It's still a real love/hate relationship for me, but I can't help but appreciate that she DOES have a lot of impact.

Like the old nursery rhyme; when she is good, she is VERY VERY good, but when she is bad, she is horrid. I check in for the times that she is good.
