ACTION ALERT: CNN's Glenn Beck threatens Muslims with concentration camps

“Action Alert

Flirting With Fascism on CNN Headline News
Host Glenn Beck threatens Muslims with concentration camps

12/5/06

The New York Times (12/4/06), profiling new CNN Headline News host Glenn Beck, called him "brash" and "opinionated," with an "unfiltered approach." The conservative talk-radio host-turned-cable news announcer, the paper reported, "takes credit for saying what others are feeling but are afraid to say."

The Times mentioned one of the things Beck has said recently, to newly elected U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), a Muslim: "Sir, prove to me that you are not working with our enemies." But as press critic Eric Alterman pointed out (Altercation, 12/4/06), as offensive as that question is, it doesn't begin to suggest the poisonousness of Beck's rhetoric about Muslims.

On his August 10 radio show, distributed by Clear Channel's Premiere Radio Networks, Beck told listeners, "The world is on the brink of World War III," then issued this warning:

All you Muslims who have sat on your frickin' hands the whole time and have not been marching in the streets and have not been saying, 'Hey, you know what? There are good Muslims and bad Muslims. We need to be the first ones in the recruitment office lining up to shoot the bad Muslims in the head.' I'm telling you, with God as my witness... human beings are not strong enough, unfortunately, to restrain themselves from putting up razor wire and putting you on one side of it. When things—when people become hungry, when people see that their way of life is on the edge of being over, they will put razor wire up and just based on the way you look or just based on your religion, they will round you up. Is that wrong? Oh my gosh, it is Nazi, World War II wrong, but society has proved it time and time again: It will happen.

On September 5, Beck took the same message to his CNN Headline News audience, declaring, "In 10 years, Muslims and Arabs will be looking through a razor wire fence at the West." He explained:

Since 9/11, Americans have gotten so fed up with the "yes, but" Muslims. The "yes, but" Muslims are the ones who show up on talkshows and in the media and say, "Yes, terrorism is bad, but"—and then they go through a list of reasons on why we should try and sympathize with people who fly planes into buildings.... If, God forbid, there's another attack, we won't have anymore patience for the "yes, buts." The Muslim community better find a spokesman who isn't a "yes, but" Muslim. They shouldn't even understand the word "but," because if they don't, when things heat up, the profiling will only get worse, and the razor wire will be coming.

Beck went on to say:

You want the profiling to stop? Then, here's an idea. Stop murdering innocent people. Stop excusing the people who do. You do that for a while, and I guarantee you won't have any more problems at the airports. Stop blowing stuff up and the world just might be your oyster. Otherwise, it's going to be like that movie, The Siege. You remember that movie? The Muslims will see the West through razor wire if things don't change.

He concluded:

Look, I'm not saying all Arabs and Muslims are anti-American. Far from it. We should get to know these people and embrace the good Muslims, and eliminate the bad ones. Here's what I don't know. I don't know if the Muslim community will ever step to the plate like the Japanese-American community did during World War II. You know, it was absolutely disgraceful how we rounded innocent people up then and, sadly, history has a way of repeating itself no matter how grotesque that history might be. The Muslim community can prevent this if they act now.

When Beck is talking about "razor wire," he's talking about concentration camps—in the original sense of the word, places where masses of people are imprisoned "just based on the way you look or just based on your religion." Despite his (perfectly accurate) observation that such camps are "Nazi, World War II wrong," comparable to the "absolutely disgraceful" wartime interment of Japanese-Americans, Beck is clearly using the threat of such camps to coerce Muslims into behavior he approves of, like volunteering "to shoot the bad Muslims in the head."

Since the overwhelming majority of U.S. Muslims are neither "murdering innocent people" nor "excusing the people who do," there's really nothing that they can do to avert Beck's threat that "the razor wire will be coming." And Beck is explicit that there's nothing non-Muslims can do to avoid locking Muslims up en masse.

The New York Times, in its profile about Beck, refers to his criticism of the animated film Happy Feet, but fails to mention that he uses his Headline News slot to issue threats that he himself compares to Nazi behavior. For the Times, CNN's decision to give Beck a TV show is a "success," because he "has increased the ratings in his 7 p.m. time period 60 percent among all viewers, and 84 percent among viewers aged 25 to 54."

The Times article quoted CNN executive Kenneth Jautz as saying that the network did not take Beck's politics into account when it hired him. "We did not set out to have anyone from any particular view fronting these shows," he said. In fact, CNN hired Beck knowing that the host's repertoire included hateful attacks--the Hurricane Katrina refugees seen on TV and the father of a terrorism victim were both "scumbags" (Mediamatters.org, 5/17/04, 9/9/05)--as well as a disturbing preoccupation with violence:
Beck has told his listeners that he was praying for a gruesome death for Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich (3/6/03), and that he was fantasizing about strangling filmmaker Michael Moore to death (5/17/05). As FAIR predicted (FAIR Action Alert, 1/18/06), Beck has not changed his repellent tune simply because he's been hired by a major media outlet.

Contrary to Beck's suggestion, there are things that the people of the U.S. can do to avoid repeating the "grotesque" history of Japanese-American internment. One of these things is to take people seriously when they start threatening people with concentration camps—rather than looking the other way because of their ratings "success."

ACTION: Please contact CNN/U.S. president Jonathan Klein and urge him to condemn Glenn Beck's chilling threats against Muslims.

106. Done, and third time I have written CNN about Beck
It's just a matter of time before CNN has to take him off and apologize. It happened for other networks with Rush and Savage. Beck is particularly annoying. Hell to me would be having to spend time with these nut jobs. They are all obnoxious, but Beck is particularly smarmy. I wonder what he has been looking up on the Internet. I am guessing it's not very nice.

3. Bad Muslims?
What a simplistic argument and what an idiot Glen Beck is. The "bad ones" (al-qaeda) were a pretty tiny fringe element up until the actions of the Bush regime. Now look.

54. My grandfather was from Canada and he used to bitch about the French
all the time! If I had a nickle for every time he said: "Those G*damned French", I'd be very wealthy.

I was on a cruise once and a Dutch man said they made fun of some other european group, (sorry I forgot the name, maybe people from Belgium but I'm not sure).

I think some people need to put down other groups just so they can feel worthy of the air they breathe.

52. Still are.
Even going with the worst-case scenario, and assuming
Al-Qaeda's support has doubled...the support of something that was only 1% (AT MOST) of the Muslim population is, comparatively speaking, nil.

Practically speaking, it's a damn sight more of a problem, but there's still 98% of Muslims out there who aren't going to go commit a suicide bombing.

That individual is pure evil. He is not insane. He is just a very bad man. He needs to be in extreme lockup, preferably in a prison where there are lots of Muslims (whatever their race or color). No, the asylum treatment is too good for him. And everyone please note: there are no sarcasm icons here.

He probably thinks we sent the "good Japanese" (Daniel Inouye, Spark Matsunaga, etc.) to shoot the "bad Japanese" in the head in WWII. We did not. We sent the 442nd/100th to Europe. On purpose. Precisely so they would not potentially be put in the position of shooting their cousins, villagers, what have you, in the head (or points south).

Come to think of it, since Inouye is and Matsunaga was a distinguished Dem Senator, Beckkk probably thinks we should shoot them in the head. :scared:

27. K&R...
And the following is what I had to say to the administration of CNN:

Are you folks over there so desperate for ratings that it seems a good alternative to stand behind a bigot and xenophobe like Glenn Beck?

His completely transparent racism is demonstrated by his utterly obnoxious questioning of U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), asking him "Sir, prove to me that you are not working with our enemies." All this because Ellison is the first Muslim to serve in congress.

He furthermore showed his pathetic cowardice when he tried to back pedal after Ellison informed him he didn't have to prove his patriotism to Beck, Glen quickly saying "I know, and I'm not asking you to...." despite the fact that everyone listening heard him ask the man to do exactly that.

Furthermore comments such as the following can not be spun as in being moderate in any way, shape or form:

Oh my gosh, it is Nazi, World War II wrong, but society has proved it time and time again: It will happen.

and

Look, I'm not saying all Arabs and Muslims are anti-American. Far from it. We should get to know these people and embrace the good Muslims, and eliminate the bad ones. Here's what I don't know. I don't know if the Muslim community will ever step to the plate like the Japanese-American community did during World War II. You know, it was absolutely disgraceful how we rounded innocent people up then and, sadly, history has a way of repeating itself no matter how grotesque that history might be. The Muslim community can prevent this if they act now.

More or less Mr. Beck has stated to Muslims in this country that "You better be a good little Muslim and prove that you like us cuz if you don't we'll round you all up and put you in cages like the animals I view you as. And, despite my attempts to sound conciliatory and moderate the bottom line is, I don't give a damn about justice because when they come to get you I won't protest and say this is wrong and you should stop. No, I'll sit back with a glass of scotch and smoking a cigar and laught "I told you so".

The fact that you people allow this man to spew his bitter, vile and patently racist propoganda that is as insipid as it is insidious makes you complicit in his bigotry and just as responsible for the hate mongering that goes out over your airwaves as he is.

You should be utterly ashamed of yourselves. Oh, but that's not the sad part. The sad part is I have a funny feeling that as long as it gets you ratings?

You could give a damn.

Ahhhhh... I feel so much better now that I got that out of my system.

The Siege came out a few years before 9/11 and it was a decent movie although nothing spectacular. Watching it today however it is a frightening, because the film was definately ahead of its time and far too much of what that film suggested could happen has happened. While it may not have been a great film when it was first released, I would definately consider it a great film today because it really has shown itself to be very prophetic.

39. You know what other TV show/Movie was scary?
First episode of the Fox Network Show "The Lone Gunmen" aired on March of 2001, it pretty much predicted the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

By the way, this was the show that was supposed to replace the X-Files, but it was pulled off air only five months later with no apparent reasons.

42. I have heard about that one, and have been wanting to check it out
I know the reason it was pulled was low ratings and bad critical reviews, but from what I heard the pilot episode it was certainly more than a bit prophetic. A story about a plane crashing into the World Trade Center monthes before it actually happened, now that is creepy.

31. Here is what I wrote
I'm writing about Mr. Glenn Beck's recent comments on Muslims. Mr. Beck concludes in his recent comments both on his CNN show and his radio show that unless Muslims take action they will soon find themselves in camps looking through barbed wire. He compares this incarceration to WWII Nazi concentration camps in his own quoted comments.

Regardless of what Mr. Beck asserts his comments really mean, the overriding influence is hate speach.

Hate speech is unacceptable in American society. I implore the CNN leadership to reevaluate their relationship to Glenn Beck. Until then, I'll be blocking your content and watching MSNBC for my news.

but NOT saying anything doesn't really get us anywhere either. I don't think sitting on your hands is viable.
I do believe the whole OJ brouhaha and eventual pulling of book and interview didn't happen because the publisher and folks at FOX "got religion". It was the outcry from the viewers.
That said, I told CNN they should at least have the intelligence, if the moral courage is lacking, to keep racist xenophobic spew off their airwaves.

76. exactly
right-wing forces have long learned how to pressure the media. when progressives write and complain to the media in large numbers, it may not necessarily make the media more progressive, but it does give them pause to think.

I doubt very much that CNN would have have on air someone promoting the same hate-speech regarding African-Americans, gay people or Jewish people because they know the response would be immediate and overwhelming.

Beck's comments are so extreme because he is attacking someone that he thinks most Americans either don't care about or feel animosity toward. He also assumes that CNN management does not care or else approves.

I read in a NY Times article that Glenn Beck said, speaking of Muslims,
"Otherwise, it's going to be like that movie, The Siege. You remember that movie? The Muslims will see the West through razor wire if things don't change."

If you do not condemn Glenn Beck's hateful statements against Muslims, you are giving them tacit approval.

The only thing that will move CNN is the potential loss of revenue. I wrote them this:

"CNN,
I am writing to tell you that I find Glenn Beck's comments about muslims to be unacceptable hate speech. I am appalled that your corporate policy would condone this.
Therefore, I will compile a list of advertisers who buy time during Beck's air time and contact them to let them know that I will no longer purchase any of their products due to their association with this kind of programming.
This list of companies and the transcript of Beck's comments will be emailed to all of my friends, family and business associates, urging them to likewise contact and boycott your adverisers, and to branch out this information to their email lists.
I understand that only by hitting CNN economically will any change be affected, but rest assured, you have caused a determined effort to remove this kind of irreponsible hate speech from the air waves"

77. Glenn Beck, 2006 = Fauther Coughlin, 1938
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Coughlin

On Nov. 20, 1938, two weeks after Kristallnacht, when Jews across Germany were attacked and killed, and Jewish businesses, homes and synagogues burned, Coughlin blamed the Jewish victims, saying that "Jewish persecution only followed after Christians first were persecuted." After this speech, and as his programs became more anti-Semitic, some radio stations, including those in New York and Chicago, began refusing to air his speeches without pre-approved scripts. This made Coughlin a hero in Nazi Germany, where papers ran headlines like "America is Not Allowed to Hear the Truth." On December 18, 1938 two thousand of Coughlin's followers marched in New York protesting potential asylum law changes that would allow more Jews (including refugees from Hitler's oppression) into the US, chanting, "Send Jews back where they came from in leaky boats!" and "Wait until Hitler comes over here!" The protests continued for several months. Donald Warren, using information from the FBI and German government archives, has also argued that Coughlin received indirect funding from Nazi Germany during this period.

Additionally, after 1936, Coughlin began supporting an organization called the Christian Front, which claimed him as an inspiration. In January, 1940, the Christian Front was shut down when the FBI discovered the group was arming itself and "planning to murder Jews, communists and 'a dozen Congressmen'" <1> and eventually establish, in J. Edgar Hoover's words, "a dictatorship, similar to the Hitler dictatorship in Germany." Coughlin publicly stated, after the plot was discovered, that he still did not "disassociate himself from the movement," and though he was never linked directly to the plot, his reputation suffered. (New York Times, Jan 22, 1940)

The main difference is that radio stations used their discretion to remove Coughlin from the air, while Glenn Beck (and Michelle Malkin and Ann Coulter and "Savage" Weiner...) are endlessly promoted.

His bio in a nutshell:

--Start career in radio.
--Become alcoholic and drug addict; refer to self as "a despicable human being".
--Supposedly lose passion for radio; enter Yale as Theology major; drop out after one semester.
--Divorce first wife.
--Turn to a "program of recovery" and convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
--Remarry.
--Pursue career in talk radio.

That's what it takes to get an hour-long show on CNN. Impressive! (Contrast with Keith O., who earned a B.S. in Communications Arts from Cornell.) It's truly pathetic that Americans accept those of such mediocrity and promote them to greatness; hopefully Beck will get knocked down off of his hate-filled pedestal before his career advances any further.

Glenn, you need to work on that aforementioned recovery. Just keep away from any and all microphones while doing so.

81. It sounds to me like Beck is actually trying to make Americans think that doing 'bad things' is
the 'natural thing' to do. Almost an inevitable eventuality of human nature - so we shouldn't feel bad about having those feelings.

This Beck argument is the same flawed argument that a woman wearing a miniskirt in a bad section of town was just "asking to get raped". That bullshit places the blame on the victim, not the assaulter.

This muslim/razor wire argument is the same flawed reasoning.

Beck is about as intelligent as Ann Coulter at this point.

He's gone over the deep end, and the good news is that when people do that, they usually drown themselves.

Glenn Beck doesn't give a damn about this country, about terrorists, or about you. He wants ratings, and the method by which he gets them is the same as every other right-wing television sensationalist: spreading blind fear and hatred.

I have zero respect for him, just the same as I have zero respect for Hannity, O'Reilly, Coulter and all of their foul-spirited colleagues.

This is America. We don't condemn people as a whole because of the actions of a few, no matter their religion, and the opinion of any man who'd even begin to evoke the memory of internment camps as a solution is worth less than dirt to me.

after what he said about President Carter, but i do understand what the other poster (sorry, I forgot the name) was saying. It is what I have said a lot - that moderate Americans can only be pushed so far before they begin to look for someone to blame-especially when their comfortable way of life is being threatened (or at least told it is being threatened). Beck's an ass, but we need to be aware of what he is saying as a possibility.

114. Being accurate isn't being an apologist....

I don't desire to fall into the same trap as the far right and misconstrue every statement that comes by. Beck has made comments such as that to my fellow Minnesotan Keith Ellision that merit condemnation. If a position is a correct one, there's no need to create false evidence. Instead, one should point to the evidence that already exists. In terms of accuracy and honesty, I will not be the left's equivalent of the far right.

have ever tried to get anyone to "sympathize" with "people who fly planes into buildings".

I'd like to see where the FUCK anyone -of any religion- has done that...

Oh. Wait! Actually, I think there WERE a couple religious leaders who minimized what happened on 9-11, engaged in cheap blame-shifting, and tried to rationalize people flying planes into buildings:

Jerry Falwell: "The ACLU has got to take a lot of blame for this. And I know I'll hear from them for this, but throwing God...successfully with the help of the federal court system...throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools, the abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked and when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad...I really believe that the pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way, all of them who try to secularize America...I point the thing in their face and say you helped this happen."

Pat Robertson: "I totally concur, and the problem is we've adopted that agenda at the highest levels of our government, and so we're responsible as a free society for what the top people do, and the top people, of course, is the court system."

Or, how about this exchange:

Federal judges are a more serious threat to America than Al Qaeda and the Sept. 11 terrorists, the Rev. Pat Robertson claimed yesterday.

"Over 100 years, I think the gradual erosion of the consensus that's held our country together is probably more serious than a few bearded terrorists who fly into buildings," Robertson said on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos."

"I think we have controlled Al Qaeda," the 700 Club host said, but warned of "erosion at home" and said judges were creating a "tyranny of oligarchy."

Confronted by Stephanopoulos on his claims that an out-of-control liberal judiciary is the worst threat America has faced in 400 years - worse than Nazi Germany, Japan and the Civil War - Robertson didn't back down.

"Yes, I really believe that," he said. "I think they are destroying the fabric that holds our nation together."

109. This is contemptible.
Theoretically, there isn't anything in any way racist or bigotted about predicting (as opposed to advocating) putting Muslims in concentration camps.

In practice, however, it's fairly clear that Mr Beck is giving it his tacit approval.

Even if we do take him at his word that it's a prediction rather than a proposal, it's a fairly poor one - I think it vanishingly unlikely that America will be interning Muslims qua Muslims in the forseeable future.

Beck should heed his own words and stop excusing an administration that has murdered so many innocent people.

Hence, their ever-increasing, hysterical, "Please, please look at me!" rhetoric.

to Akron for his "Christmas hate message" ...

I wonder if they'd be kind enough to send a note (not a "message") to where he's going to appear to say that they would no longer do any business with them ... if they got wind of what he's been saying ... not that they're not already aware of what a sick f*ck he is anyway ...

130. Sigh. Don't watch cable news, people.
Can you really have not noticed? The U.S. news media are going broke. They're hiring these goons 1) because only the bottom-feeders are left as an audience and 2) as provocation to the rest of you.

Writing letters to CNN tells them this strategy is succeeding. Tuning in so you can get outraged and run back here to share tells them it's succeeding.

If you really want to reform our corporate news media, you will starve it.
