The 10 Best Conservative Movies of 2005
By Don Feder
FrontPageMagazine.com | December 30, 2005

snip

Conservative cinema does more than entertain; movies that do no more are visual candy. It instructs and inspires. Conservative films celebrate virtue. They tell timeless tales of individuals overcoming all manner of adversity to achieve true greatness. They’re about honesty, loyalty, courage and patriotism. They’re concerned with conservatism’s cardinal values – faith, family and freedom.

If I were to list the best conservative movies of the last decade, they would include: “Lord of The Rings: The Return of The King (2003)” “Open Range” (2003), “LA Confidential” (1997), Mel Gibson’s “The Patriot” (2000), and “Spiderman,” I and II (2002 and 2004). But also some quieter films, like last year’s “In Good Company” and “The Family Man” (2000) would make my list.

Here, then, are my choices for The 10 Best Conservative Films of 2005.

1. Cinderella Man –

2. King Kong – .

3. The Island –

4. “Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe” –

5. The Great Raid

6. Batman Begins –

7. The Greatest Game Ever Played –

8. Little Manhattan –

9. Coach Carter --

10. Memoirs Of A Geisha

1. Why isn't "Serenity" included? If that isn't about fighting for
what's good and right (aka "timeless tales of individuals overcoming all manner of adversity to achieve true greatness") then what is? :7

14. Why would fighting for good and right be "conservative"?

19. "Serenity" Is NOT A Conservative Movie
It's about fighting against an oppressive government that wants people to be mindless drones - or else. Besides, Joss would probably kill himself if "Serenity" showed up on that list!

2. The Movie Theater Seat of Procrustes
Talk about torturing the art to fit the critic! Not even doctrinaire pre-war Marxists did it so well!

I also find it funny how many Conservatives like to name-drop C.S. Lewis -- and G.K. Chesterton, too -- to make them sound cultured, when both Lewis and Chesterton would certainly be shouted down on TownHall.com and from any right-wing blog around.

"Timeless values" know no ideological master. The Conservatives' modern lust to trademark Good and Evil has led them to a new pinnacle. Like King Kong on top of the Empire State Building -- only a pinnacle of craven absurdity.

10. I would think that the Spiderman films have liberal overtones, too...
Admittedly not a big fan of them, but what I see is a story about a guy who is given an enormous boon, and uses it to help the less fortunate. According to conservative values, he should have just used it to benefit himself, and if his inferiors want to be protected, they can just get bitten by a radioactive spider themselves.

5. Some decent movies actually...although the conservative spin is a stretch
Has anyone seen Cinderella Man? It looked really good to me.

15. What's Funny About "Cinderella Man" Appearing On This List.....
...is that the movie's title reportedly kept some conservative moviegoers away---they thought it was about somebody gay.

That, plus Russell Crowe's thuggish behavior in that Manhattan hotel, doomed what is supposed to be a pretty good flick......

8. Of course conservative can't make films.
Filmmaking requires creativity which conservatives intensely lack.

After watching 'Memoirs Of A Geisha' the other night I left the theater with a more liberal attitude than ever. Seeing Japan's traditions destroyed made it evident how useless war is and how all is does is screw up society.

12. They're into prostitution, big time.
Edited on Sun Jan-01-06 12:52 PM by djohnson
Since it's the only way they can get any, and even then, sometimes not.

Edit: I'm not under the impression a traditional geisha is solely a prostitute, but they did entertain men in exchange for money, which is something Cons think is status quo.

13. How do they claim any of these movies as "conservative" vs. anything else?
It's like that FOX news clip where some RW nutjob was pimping "patriotic" vs. "non-patriotic" movies and they included "The Passion of the Christ" in their "patriotic" list, and one of the FOX "news" casters who wasn't "on script" asked why "Passion" was "patriotic", and all the nutjob could do was go "humina-humina".

16. I had the misfortune of seeing "Little Manhattan" on a plane
fortunately without sound as I wouldnt buy earphones. This is about ELEVEN year olds in love. This ode to precocious puberty could only be of interest to eleven year olds and pedophiles. Besides that it used bizarre fantasy sequences and every cliche in the book. I give it a 4 out of 5 on the abomination scale (5 is reserved for the worst movies ever made, like Rocky V)

17. I would hardly call "Batman Begins" a conservative movie
What could possibly be conservative about that movie? That Batman is rich? That he fights crime?

There are a lot of liberal/progressive ideas in this movie:

1) Fear is a powerful weapon, and is used by unsavory people (e.g., the Bush administration) to prey on others. The best way to fight it is to confront your own fears and turn those fears on the victimizers (which is what Batman does in the movie).

2) Capital punishment and revenge-killing is wrong. (Batman refuses to become an executioner. He states quite clearly that this is because it makes the crimefighter no different from the criminal.)

3) A multibillionaire is responsible for his community and for serving and improving it. (Bruce Wayne's father donated a substantial amount of his fortune to try to help Gotham weather a depression. Bruce feels an overwhelming need to carry on this legacy.)

4) Not all criminals are bad. Some commit their crimes out of sheer necessity. These people deserve our compassion.

5) It's not who are, but what you DO that defines you.

I have a feeling the Freepers just fast-forwarded through all the "talky" stuff and went straight to the Batmobile chase scene.

18. Having just watched that movie....
I would have to agree. The "thoughtful warrior" has always been a liberal icon, because that role requires careful action and maintaining a personal moral vigilance. That description is 180 degrees in opposition to those who have brought us secret torture prisons, spying, graft, cronyism, and lies innumerable.

Conservatives would only see the "fighting the bad guys" stuff in Batman Begins. All the complexity behind crime/poverty, small time criminals v. organized and powerful crime, etc. must have been lost on this conservative reviewer.

What's ironic is that the Chickenhawks of the Right love fighting the bad guys in movies, but won't avail themselves of the opportunity presented to them by their morally righteous (and fellow chickenhawk) leaders--military enlistment.

Welcome to DU, by the way. :hi:

21. Thanks, Jade
I've watched this movie probably half a dozen times, and one of the things I really love about it is, as you say, "the thoughtful warrior" approach that it takes to the Batman character. This was present in the comic books for decades but somehow never made it onscreen before.
