Do you want real Ethics Reform?
Edited on Tue Dec-05-06 07:07 PM by Eric J in MN
Then contact Congress now.

On C-Span today, Rep. Michael E. Capuano (D-MA) said that they haven't decided if they're going to ban private travel, or allow private organizations to pay for travel as long as a registered lobbyist isn't along for the ride.

The latter would let fake charities send the Congresspeople we helped elect to golf in Scotland and to corrupt the people we worked so hard to get into office.

I sent this message to my Congressperson and my Senators. Feel free to use it as is, or to put it into your own words:

Please ban privately-paid trips by members of Congress.

Do not make exceptions for trips paid for by lobbyists, educational groups, and charities. All three of those groups are seeking to influence legislation.

All travel by a member of Congress should be paid for by the public or by the member personally.

If a seminar, fact-finding mission, etc. is important, then the taxpayers should pay.

...we don't want loopholes in Ethics Reform. No travel for Congress members paid for by private groups.

They are deciding now on the legislation. Now is the time to contact Congress.

5. Thanks. If Democratic activists don't speak up,
...then Congress will probably keep the corrupt system of golfing trips to Scotland from charities (cough) about the same.

12. Please contact Congress this month, because...
...they will have decided by the time they start the new term in January.

Ethics Reform is part of the "first 100 hours" of Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House.

Tell Congress no loopholes. Congressional trips shouldn't be paid for by lobbyists OR charities OR educational groups.

If a trip is important, the taxpayers should pay, and then the Congress members are only indebted to the public.

14. This could go either way...
...real Ethics Reform or phony Ethics Reform.

Contact Congress and say you want a ban on privately-funded Congressional travel, with no exceptions.
