The Robert Gates confirmation is good.
Some thoughts:

1. Rumsfeld is gone. His horrible legacy is secure in history.

2. Media attention will be focused on what Gates does in Iraq.

3. The electorate's ball is in the neocon red zone, and it's fourth down and long.

4. Nominee Robert Gates publicly repudiated Bush's current policy.

5. We can hold this guy's feet to the fire with a Democratic Congress.

Of course, there are horrible problems to overcome, but on balance Gates will be neutered.

Your thoughts?

1. Okay, now I just read he wasn't under oath.
Since he's on record, does that matter?

It's 25 months until the end of the Bush Regime.

3. Couldn't be much worse
Gates is a criminal who was a major player in the worst subversion of the Constitution in the last 25 years.

He is an ultra-partisan political hack whose only qualification for the job is that he's not Rumsfeld

His "repudiation" of Smirk's Iraq policy was nothing more than window dressing, like all of the phony intramural bickering the GOP trots out every few months or so to give the lying media something to talk about.

He was confirmed unanimously. The closest his feet will get to the fire is when Condi rubs them.

This is pretty much Smirk's way of saying, "I am going to continue to throw whatever shit I can come up with at you, and there isn't a fucking thing you can do about it".

4. "He's not Rumsfeld" - that's his major selling point
And that's why Gates is being sold in this way.

Point well taken. That's why I started the thread. I can't say you're not right.

9. Exactly
Watching Democracy Now this morning AGAIN the only place with actual news that's relevant to history. The guy is a partisan hack that has zero respect for congress (was proved to be subverting it's wishes and the intelligence agencies in the past but oh well!).

After watching the more mainstream version of history but that which is slightly critical-(Countdown) the conclusion was that Gates will (shock!gasp!) say the truth (Iraq is a failure) while continuing to do whatever Bush (Cheney) wants.

Instead of bringing the troops home we will be sending many more. Can't WAIT to see what the Democrats do. (not holding my breath)

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

5. It is going to
be interesting to see what falls in place in terms of the Baker Committee. I do not think many DUers will think Gates is an improvement by February.

6. Those results are due tomorrow.
It's possible that all the fuss about Gates will be moot.

The next three months will be very interesting no matter what.

10. Well, yes, of course.
The report will generate the results.

And, surely, many reports on the report, as well as the results of the report.

:)

7. I doubt he'll suddenly get clean - could be another chance to indict him.
Always look on the bright side of whatever...
