Dozens of workers walked the (National Alliance)'s isolated compound near Hillsboro before William Pierce died of cancer in 2002. Since then the group has splintered and only four people remain at the compound, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, an Alabama-based organization that monitors hate groups.
Joe Roy of the Law Center said the National Alliance's 90 percent drop in membership "is not that unusual for these single-personality groups like that."
Erich Gliebe, Pierce's chosen successor, gave up the job to Shaun Walker. Walker became embattled with other National Alliance members, who then joined the rival National Vanguard, based in Sacramento.
"From my perspective, that's a good thing," Roy said. "They're taking it out on each other on the Internet."
