Say Hello to the Goodbye Weapon
Say Hello to the Goodbye Weapon

By David Hambling| Also by this reporter
02:00 AM Dec, 05, 2006

The crowd is getting ugly. Soldiers roll up in a Hummer. Suddenly, the whole right half of your body is screaming in agony. You feel like you've been dipped in molten lava. You almost faint from shock and pain, but instead you stumble backwards -- and then start running. To your surprise, everyone else is running too. In a few seconds, the street is completely empty.

You've just been hit with a new nonlethal weapon that has been certified for use in Iraq -- even though critics argue there may be unforeseen effects.

According to documents obtained for Wired News under federal sunshine laws, the Air Force's Active Denial System, or ADS, has been certified safe after lengthy tests by military scientists in the lab and in war games.

..............

The beam produces what experimenters call the "Goodbye effect," or "prompt and highly motivated escape behavior." In human tests, most subjects reached their pain threshold within 3 seconds, and none of the subjects could endure more than 5 seconds.

1. How adorable!
Now when they make a bomb that makes people sit down and rationally discuss things, I'll be impressed.

7. Brings back memories of 'Ali G Indahouse'
Edited on Wed Dec-06-06 12:49 PM by YOY
Basically Ali gets the UN stoned. Everybody chills. Two (male) warring fictitious African Nations' leaders start making out. The Thai embassador starts shooting ping pong balls from her...well, you get the idea.

If you haven't seen it go out and rent it (be prepared to be very offended if you are sensative to toilet humor!)

and as for rational, I don't recall rationality being part of my stoned discussions...come to think of it I don't remember much of anything I said when I was stoned...

3. That is horrifying.
It will be used as crowd control at peaceful demonstrations.

If they have it , they will use it;
The universal rule of weaponry.

36. Can we aim this 'Goodbye Weapon' at the White House?
I'd love nothing more than to watch Georgey run screaming out of the White House crying out for his mama to make the pain go away....

But seriously, this weapon is 100% torture. It tortures large groups of people.

You know they want to use it on us here in the U.S.? I think an Air Force general suggested that they do that - test it on U.S. crowds to prove to the world that if it's safe enough to use on Americans, then it's safe enough for the world.

Nice to be a tax paying guinea pig, ain't it?

While a sniper shoots the operator. They left out that part.

13. We need to be able to decide where our tax dollars go.
I am furious that my money is being used for these purposes. Not only does it ultimately lead to nonsense, but it further aggravates whatever situation they were trying to eliminate. Those people will return until they get what they came to get. And that is probably a voice.

I guarantee that if we can chose where our money goes, it will pull the rug right out from under the war mongers. No one on the planet wants war, except the corporations.

than "anticipated"- pain can truly imobilize people.

And elderly, infirm, or very young children are likely to pay the highest cost of this 'wonderful technology'-

DAMN- how I wish this f---d up world would put as much time, money and energy into thwarting the desperation and dysfunction that leads people to find themselves in situations where 'weapons' replace words-

Not in my lifetime obviously- but maybe someday.... maybe somehow-

18. There is a simple truth
If you halt or limit a groups ability to make itself heard they will simply up the effort to be heard. This is how terrorism forms. If you provide a people with no means to address their grievances and no way to strike back at your military effectively they will rise up against you in any way they can.

A rule of negotiation is you have to always leave a dignified path for the opponent to take. Failure to do so will only force them to go through you.

22. The original concept
for this by the way comes from Russia. There are two companies in the US who build systems like this for commercial uses. It is microwave based and therefore does not penetrate metal very well.

41. Deploy the Kindergarten Powered Death Ray.
It's really simple to use.

1) Distribute small (3"x5" or so) mirrors to a bunch if kindergarteners.
2) Show them how to reflect the sun onto an object.
3) Bet them that they can't make ALL of their reflected spots gather on ONE target.
4) Get the hell out of the way!

32. Their human testing sounded "fun" -
"The tests ranged from simple exposure in the laboratory to elaborate war games involving hundreds of participants.

The military simulated crowd control situations, rescuing helicopter crews in a Black Hawk Down setting and urban assaults. More unusual tests involved alcohol, attack dogs and maze-like obstacle courses."

There's a hot new reality show in there somewhere...

Edited on Thu Dec-07-06 04:39 AM by symbolman
Oh THESE are such PROUD and HAPPY Times for the Human Race and particularly Americans. What a beautiful world to have such wonders in it? :)

This reminds me of the old Joke: "Have you seen the New GERMAN Microwave? It Seats 40 people!" (Not really Funny, I know, but apt at this point)

Now it's time to develop something that can open in a second, like an umbrella, and while shielding the "offender" it can also be turned towards the machine and used as a parabolic dish to RETURN the BEAM to the SENDER, rendering THEM into Armor Hot Dogs instead.

They are so fucking smart, but you know what? While the dumb people get fried or run, the smart people will be running towards the landmine field, knowing where the path through it is..

They just don't get it. Any man who invents a LOCK, there's another Man who can CRACK IT. "Good bye Effect"? I want someone to invent the "FUCK YOU EFFECT" as an antidote for this :)

I wonder what it does to all the birds in the trees, and the other animals in it's path, give them cataracts or just drop them? Will they birth mutants after that? Betcha it will STERILIZE you at the same time.

Oh Joy.

Assholes. We need a Dept of PEACE, and a new Vision. All this KILL/MURDER/MAIM/DEATH shit is getting REALLY OLD. Aren't YOU sick of it?

35. I wonder what this will do to the eyes
I read about these Russian soldiers who would keep warm by standing by a radar transmitter. They later went blind from cataracts - the radiation heated up their eyes much faster than the rest of their bodies and they didn't notice.

40. Do you think the U.S. government gives two shits about our eyes?
But I see what you are saying. I'm sure that if your eyes got struck by this weapon there could very well be long term side effects...

But that's the way the US Gov't likes it - long term effects are difficult to prove.
