I don't want to get started if I don't have time to watch the whole thing - or an entire segment.
If I have time later, I'll answer my own post.

5. This is theft. You should be ashamed of yourself for participating in this theft. |

As a documentary producer myself, it infuriates me to see people stealing content like this. It is virtually impossible to make a living doing documentary films, but we do it anyway because someone has to get these messages out to the public.
SHAME, SHAME, SHAME on anyone who steals content like this.

6. re: stealing movies online |
|
I had this discussion with a friend who makes docs... She claimed that she would rather have people watch her docs on something like youtube for free than not at all. She said that if people who probably would never pay for the video watched it for free, they might become people who would later pay for her work. She claimed to enjoy the free exposure and likened it to marketing and production costs. I think that unless the artist puts it up, it's not right. What's your opinion?

7. That is the producer's choice, not the viewer's. |

If the producers of Jesus Camp want to let people watch it for free they will post it online. They did not. In fact the site owner acknowledges that they have been making them take down the content. When you take something from someone else without their consent, it is stealing.
We are not letting our current film out on the web b/c it is in theatrical distribution and will be shown on broadcast TV in February. After that we expect to sell CDs. Jesus Camp is taking a similar path.
Some content we produce in the future we may put up on the web. The web is a good place to be discovered if you don't have existing distribution. It is also a good place for doc shorts as there is not much distribution for them anywhere else.

8. Well then they can do what Michael Moore did |
|
Provide permission for people to download it. If they don't then they might not want it viewed without their permission.
