4. maybe Gates isn't enough of a right wing authoritarian for them........ |

Bunning literally can't function anymore. I was stunned the "folks" from Kentucky sent him back to the senate in '04.

One of the perks of being president is getting to choose who you want to fill certain roles. It is maddening that some people just want every nominee to get rejected. It's not reasonable, and clouds the issue when there are ACTUAL problems with nominees.

But I consider being involved in the training and cover-up of death squads to be an "actual problem"... even if it did happen 20 years ago.

Because Gates is Baker's candidate, and right now Baker is the only game in town with respect to changing our Iraq policy. There will be huge pressure for Bush to go along with Baker, and Gates is already on the same page as the ISG. Pretty simple, really. That, and dragging up Iran-Contra isn't going to interest anybody just this minute.

6. Gates wants to discuss with Iran and Syria. Santorum wants to bomb them! |
|
I assume this is the reason he voted NO.
As for Bunning, who knows. He may have thought it was Bill Gates?

dem candidate, a doctor and a state rep, went from 25% to slightly ahead. Then McConnell came down and pulled in all his favors. We almost got rid of Bunning with a fine man, who started the race virtually unknown. Since he was unmarried, the pugs floated the rumor that he is gay, added some backward motion on the ballot to get out the fundies, and Bunning squeaked through (maybe.) He is senile; would not debate live; he did not stick to debate rules, but rather read off a monitor from D.C. He is not the future Robert Byrd, making eloquent speeches from the floor of the Senate. He is lucky to get out of bed.

From what I gather Bunning should be someplace where he can wear Footy P.J.s all day and eat soft foods.
BTW if you google "Bunning Crazy" you get 30,800 hits

... why we didn't filibuster this? We don't have to approve anyone before the new Congress meets, and then we can force Bush to give us a candidate that will please us.
