Larisa Alexandrovna: Litvinenko and the FSB's Authority to Kill

FSB - Authority to Kill

Oh boy, so the FSB is behind the plot {to kill Russian Lt. Col. Whistleblower Litvinenko, -ed.} according to British authorities? Why am I not surprised? Probably because I have already reported these allegations and because I have been saying as much since I started covering this case, which i am technically not covering right now, so I can blog about it. Here is the latest from the Times:

"Security sources have told The Times that the FSB orchestrated a “highly sophisticated plot” and was likely to have used some of its former agents to carry out the operation on the streets of London"

I don't agree with this interpretation of events, however:

"MI5 and MI6 are working closely with Scotland Yard on the investigation. A senior police source told The Times yesterday that the method used to kill the 43-year-old dissident was intended to send a message to his friends and allies."

Simply put, assassinating a British citizen on British soil using a bio-nuclear weapon might be seen as an act of war, and rightfully so. I was told, and I also believe, that the FSB (and the S Directorate of the SVR) folks behind this believed they would not be found out, but that the attack would work like an attack on a "nest." Given the amount of contamination, looks like a nest hit. {snip}

8. Peter B. Collins has also covered this
He has Larisa on his show each week and I remember hearing them discuss this recently. Peter is one of the best progressive voices we have. For those not familiar you can listen online at www.peterbcollins.com

13. Bionuclear is defined as
involving "aspects of nuclear physics and interaction of radiation with matter that are required for advanced study and applications in the general areas of radiology, nuclear medicine technology, and bionuclear engineering." Note that there is a bionuclear engineering program at UC-Berkeley. http://www.nuc.berkeley.edu/undergraduate/options/bionuceng.html

7. Sending a message to his "friends", about what might happen.
Has that ever happened here?

Plame? Shinseki?

Purging dissenters isn't supposed to be American; that's the Communists.
