Here in Oregon we vote by mail, I've only lived out here for 10 years and don't know how it got started but it seems to have been a good idea. Oregonians get our ballots about a month ahead of election day followed by a voters pamphlet that goes into the legal explanation of the measures and a listing of the candidates, that's followed up by paid submissions by folks that are for or against the measure or Representative. Out here we're "Motor, Voters" when you go to get your driver license you can register to vote. At the beginning of October it's in the news that the ballots are on their way and to expect them in the mail. If yours doesn't show up you give them a call and you get a new ballot sent out to you. If the address is wrong, you have time to go get it fixed and get a ballot. Besides, if you moved you should have gotten a new D/L and then they would have your address. So now that your set up to vote, you cruise through the pamphlet make your choices and mail in your ballot. Pretty straight forward, if your nervous that it didn't make it, you call to the elections office and ask if you've been checked in. If not you can get another ballot and vote again. What keeps people from having 2 votes counted in case of slow mail, is that after the ballot is filled out you stick it into a security envelope, they all look alike, then it goes into an envelope that you sign. When your ballot comes in your signature is verified and your checked off as having voted, your security envelope is pulled out and tossed into the pile with the rest. If your a die hard and want to vote on Nov. 7th, great, take your ballot on down to any of the ballot collection points and drop it off. No certain precinct to go to, any port in the storm will do. I'm sure that there is a group of vote counters that sit around and tally the votes. This is where I want to make a change. I'd like to have Nov. 7th and 8th, national field trip day. Yep, all the Juniors in high school get to go to the voting centers and count the votes. The seniors get to go along and look over their shoulder's to make sure they do it right. Thus, we are involving our youth in the voting process and they'll be more likely to vote once they come of age. Want a fair election, your going to have to work for it, NOBODY is going to give it to you. Write your state Reps. now and get the ball rolling and ask for a refund for those damn machines.
