Are Al Gore's denials part of a pre-planned strategy to run in 08?
Edited on Wed Dec-06-06 11:20 PM by RiverStone
I thought Gore did a great job on the Today Show this a.m., particularly his emphasizing that the Iraq war was "the worst strategic mistake in the entire history of the United States". So after that, Matt asked/prodded/hypothesized from at least 4 different angles the WILL YOU RUN in 08 question and Gore repeatedly said - "I have no intention of running." Finally, Matt did get Gore to acknowledge he has "not totally ruled it out."

Funny, why does Gore leave that one loose thread? Everyone is chopping at the bit for the slightest clue he's diving into the 08 race. It seems Gore could put an end to the furious speculation by emphatically saying something like, "I will not, absolutely not be running for President in 08. I appreciate the question, but my direction is not and will not ever be to become President of the United States." Period!

I'd love to see Gore run and it is fun to believe that these denials are part of a pre-conceived strategy; that all along he and Tipper and other insiders fully anticipate a late entry in some dramatic fashion. Though one could make a hobbie of wishful thinking...watching...waiting.

Wonder why he does not simply slam the door shut?

1. Maybe he likes seeing us squirm?
I somehow don't think he plans on running. I think he is a lot busier now with An Inconvenient Truth and the climate crises than to put President on his plate. Just my idea on it. Maybe he doesn't come out and say he isn't going to run though, just in case he decides to.

3. I desperately want him to run, but...
Edited on Wed Dec-06-06 11:24 PM by roamer65
he simply may not want the job. If that is the case, can't say that I would blame him for passing it up. It is a hellacious mess to clean up.

4. I just wonder if he would
send Bush to the Hague when the rest of the world demands accountability for the war crimes.

5. He won't run unless heis guaranteed to win, basically
if enough people demand him to be president, then he would run, but he is not going to try to grow the grass roots himself on a wing and a prayer... That's my understanding from what he has said.

6. That makes sense.
I wonder what that (guarantee) would need to look like for Gore to say, "Its a sure thing."

9. if he got the backing of the entertainment industry, for one
if the "hollywood liberals" made him popular.

the movie is obviously helping.

they need to play up the FACTS - the facts of what Bush said and what he did. The facts of what Gore warned against and what happened.

7. I think he knows that the elections are still rigged...
I don't blame him - if the elections are rigged to loose again, that is an insult beyond all insults.

Come on America, make our election system transparent.

We need Al Gore so desperately as the President of the United States...

This time, you have to FIGHT for it!

14. I don't think so.
Gore has the political skills learned (earned) since 2000 to stand on his own without attacking others in his own party.

Does Hillary?

23. Obama is gonna take out Hillary early
That's why Krugman has written about Gore/Obama ticket--because the scenario is very realistic. Gore has lots of time to decide. It's more efficacious that way. The longer he waits, the louder the calls will come. I think he's in.

17. Want more Gore?
Gore is watching and waiting to see what happens over the coming months.

As was already mentioned - he has a new book coming out in May 2007.

If there is a positive public response to his book - that will help create the conditions for Al Gore to enter the race. But it doesn't make sense for him to enter the race for the Dem nomination starting out at the back of a crowded field, fighting for attention.

What really counts is: are "we the people" - and especially registered Dems - calling on Al Gore to run again and serve as our President for the next 8 years (starting 1-20 2009)?

But if people really think that there is someone else (Hillary, Clark, Edwards, Obama ...) who could do a better job, then there's no reason for Al to come forward.

It's great that Gore's name is regularly mentioned as a potential nominee. It is already helping his poll numbers grow into double-digits. Only Hillary is polling significantly higher, and a lot of that has to do with the general thrust of media speculation thus far.

19. No, but he WANTS you to think that
Next, he'll start making hints that he's going to be running, when in reality, he'll be planning NOT to run.

It's a subtle, sophisticated game.

20. Politicians that run for president have big egos
And, that goes for pols on both sides of the aisle.

He is probably waiting for the buzz to grow louder & louder until he can finally say that the people want him to run, and that he is just following the will of the people.

I'm not saying this to knock Gore at all - he's probably at the top of my wishlist for 2008 - I'm just stating it because he wants to get maximum effect from his annnoucement.
