This is one of those times when I really want to be proven wrong. But every time I think of a Democratic candidate that fits anything on the poll, I remember 1984.
1984 presidential ticket included a woman for VP. She was Geraldine Ferraro, along with the wonderful Walter Mondale for president. Either one would have done far better than Ronnie the Cowboy. I was 17 that year. I'm proud of my state, which sent 10 electoral votes for Mondale/Ferraro.
We have yet to have ANY non-Anglo-Saxon in the White House as President or as VP. People were making a big deal out of Ferraro being Italian. Oddly enough, they didn't raise a stink about her keeping her own name after marriage, like Hillary Rodham tried to do.
The Dems are unlikely to put forward anyone who is not Anglo-Saxon or male because of the Reagan landslide in 1984. So if we do get a non-Anglo or female, it will be on the Republican ticket. You won't see non-religious or religious non-Christians in the Republican party. The Repubs love to rip the non-religious for being non-religious, they'll never put one on a ticket this visible.
Look at what's happening to my own Representative Keith Ellison. He's black and Muslim and he's getting ripped every damn day because of it. And he won here by a lot. MN 5 is a safe Dem district.
Also look at MN 6 with Michele Bachmann. Yes, she's a Republican and a crackpot at that. But after she slithered past Patty Wetterling with one of the ugliest campaigns ever, what did the newspapers focus on? Her freaking wardrobe! And tons of letters to the ed were written demanding to know who styles the hair of, and who designs the suits of the new male members of MN's delegation.
Other demographics you're unlikely to see on a major party ticket:
Single people: That will create a field day for the Family Values Are Everything crowd.
Married, no kids: We did elect one once, Grover Cleveland. His wife gave birth while he was serving. See Family Values Are Everything.
Homosexuals, Bisexuals, Asexuals: Family Values again. See above. Homosexuals will have the hardest campaign season. The mudslinging will reach new depths of ugly.
Working class or farmer background: No more Abraham Lincoln success stories. Only people with money will be able to afford to sacrifice everything to go on the campaign trail (your job, for instance, because if you lose, it won't be there on Wednesday). It's too bad, because we need the reality check that comes from real people having had real struggles. There's also way too much in real people backgrounds (this also includes middle class) for the mudslingers to find and misinterpret. Look for a nasty campaign.
Introverts: May be good at governing, but they are not outgoing enough to be able to do any campaigning at all. They'll come across as cold and unfriendly. Think about your own teen years. Was the kid everyone said was snobbish really someone who was too shy to be the first one to say hi? We'll never have an introvert in any elected office because of how the campaigns are run.
I look at this list and I fit in almost every category I've added. I'm as unelectable as they come. And the funny thing is, when I was a kid, I wanted to be the second (not the first) female president of the USA. And that was because I thought I was being realistic at the time, thinking someone would beat me to the First Female slot.
