Slowly, collectively we learn bit by bit from history. Each generation allows itself a greater perspective on the human condition than the generation before it.
Never quickly will the human race move forward, but move forward we do. One specific and isolated event, however tragic will never be the catalyst for our collective human education-- it takes many of these events played out over a span of time. But it seems we do learn. The "freaks" of 100 years ago are now mainstream members of society. The number of disenfranchised members of the human race grows smaller every day (though it appears to be at an agonizing pace).
I have more faith in humanity than is probably warranted-- specific humans? Not so much. But as a collective, I think we're moving forward.
