So why are we funding the embassy version of Neverland in Baghdad?
Edited on Thu Dec-07-06 10:26 AM by theHandpuppet
Why does this govt continue to pour a bazillion dollars into the construction of what will be the world's largest embassy (more like a city, with its own power plants, etc) in the heart of Baghdad? What is the point of this boondoggle? We have needy Americans right here at home still living in FEMA trailers and yet the govt has money for this outrage? Our soldiers don't have proper equipment but we're busy building pools and luxury accomodations for... for... well, someone, I guess. And just who gets this abomination if we ever get to leave?

The funds for this embassy need to be CUT and I mean NOW. Hopefully we can see an end to this sham come January, but I've heard almost nothing about this massive waste of taxpayer money for ages.

It's GWB's MONUMENT TO HIMSELF. Fits right in with his meglomania. I'm sure God told him to build it.

(Excerpt)
The New Embassy

Indeed, the massive $592-million project may be the most lasting monument to the U.S. occupation in the war-torn nation. Located on a on a 104-acre site on the Tigris river where U.S. and coalition authorities are headquartered, the high-tech palatial compound is envisioned as a totally self-sustaining cluster of 21 buildings reinforced to 2.5 times usual standards. Some walls as said to be 15 feet thick or more. Scheduled for completion by June 2007, the installation is touted as not only the largest, but the most secure diplomatic embassy in the world.

The 1,000 or more U.S. government officials calling the new compound home will have access to a gym, swimming pool, barber and beauty shops, a food court and a commissary. In addition to the main embassy buildings, there will be a large-scale US Marine barracks, a school, locker rooms, a warehouse, a vehicle maintenance garage, and six apartment buildings with a total of 619 one-bedroom units. Water, electricity and sewage treatment plants will all be independent from Baghdad's city utilities. The total site will be two-thirds the area of the National Mall in Washington, DC.

9. Then they'll hire Blackwater Security Services to guard the place...
...KBR to supply the food and wash the clothes
...they'll lease SUV's from GMC for 3 years at $250,000 a piece (which they'll never use)
...everytime a mortar round destroys part of the complex they'll hire Halliburton to fix it...

and the list goes on and on and on and....

7. They had dreams of occupying Iraq for a century
Now non-operational, of course, but the builders are close personal toadies of the Bush family.

12. I think most of the money's spent
It's about 80 percent complete, and we've already told the Iraqis we're giving them the Republican Palace back next year. It's likely going to be a white elephant, and probably abandoned within a few years as Iraq either drifts into Iran's circle or falls into complete chaos. I hope it has an excellent rooftop helo pad.
