French presidential hopeful asks Howard Dean to set up a visit to the US

"French presidential hopeful Royal to visit United States"

The French Socialist party's presidential candidate Segolene Royal will visit the United States "before the end of January", she said during a socialist congress in Portugal.

Royal said she had asked Howard Dean, head of the Democrat Party, "to set up my first trip to the United States", while attending a bilateral meeting at a two-day congress of European socialists in the city of Oporto.

She underlined that she wished to bring up a plan for "joint research units" between French and US researchers as she was concerned by the "hemorrhage of young French researchers to the United States".

European Socialists eager to work with U.S. Democrats

Socialist leaders attending a meeting of the European Socialist Party pledged that with the Democrats on the rise, strong ties could be renewed with the United States after years of cool relations with Republican President George W. Bush.

Howard Dean, chairman of the national committee of the U.S. Democratic Party, is attending the two-day conference together with the leaders of leftist governments of several countries and party leaders from across Europe.

"We are not anti-American, we want the real America, your America," former Danish Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, president of the European Socialist Party, said in remarks directed at Dean.

Socialists, or centre-left governments, currently hold or share power in just over half of Europe.

3. I love that the guv
is in Europe, meeting with heads of states, and others, and taking steps (even if they are small) to undue some of the damage lil bush has inflicted regarding our relationship with Europe. (And I can't help but wish Dean had been elected as President)

4. .
What a fitting quote:
"We are not anti-American, we want the real America, your America"
It seems the whole world is waiting for that.

And I like the pics. Dean would have been a good and respected President. What a contrast to Bush...

8. Dean and the other folks looks so at ease
and comfortable chatting. They look, dare I say, happy. This is the way it should be. Not all this doom and gloom and those miserable faces of this admin that we have to put up with everyday.

10. Great WP article and pic about Segolene Royal....
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/07/20/AR2006072001738.html

"Cyberspace has helped Royal brand herself as a political outsider and relative newcomer at a time when polls show that French voters are fed up with disarray and paralysis in government and are pining for a fresh face.

Her campaign Web site ( http://www.desirsdavenir.org/ , which translates as "Desires for the Future") features blogs that solicit views on the economy, unemployment and immigration. Chapter by chapter, she is writing and publishing a book on the site that has been likened to a political manifesto. She recently shook the Socialist Party hierarchy by using her Web site to criticize one of its sacred cows -- the 35-hour workweek, adopted as law of the land by the party when it controlled Parliament in 1998. Several blogs that her aides claim are independent also are pushing for her candidacy."

16. Kick and Recommended so
the Front Page can see what that "gad about" Dean is up to these days.

Who is the woman in the pic with Zapatero and Dean?

Dean's having a good time spreading our Democratic Principles in spite of the tragic monkeyshow.

18. I am not sure. I also found this....
Translated...

"The head of the Executive, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, received yesterday in Moncloa the president of the American Democratic Party, Howard Dean, who also talked with Jose Blanco and Trinidad Jiménez. In the photography, Blanco and Jiménez flank Dean while they walk by the gardens of Moncloa."

So maybe that is who in the picture in this article.

http://www.abc.es/20061207/nacional-politica/psoe-howard-dean_200612070255.html

Now to be really confusing...I found this. Which is with Zapatero.

Spain's Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, left, speaks with the
Democratic Committee Chairman Howard Dean, right, before a meeting at the
Moncloa Palace, in Madrid, Wednesday, Dec. 6

So I might have the captions wrong? Not sure with the translations I did in Babelfish.

20. Yes, we did.
I am going to post something in the DFA forum about a meeting with Dean in 04 when he was considering running for chair. HollyJ posted it at HEP, and I don't think she will mind if I share a little. I am about the only one who posts there, so you are welcome to visit my abode.
