Europe breathed a sigh of relief when Democrats won the election.
Now it looks like they'll work closely with us to rebuild what George Bush destroyed. That's really good news.

"OPORTO, Portugal (Reuters) - European Socialists promised on Thursday to work to rebuild Europe's strategic alliance with the United States now that the Democrats control Congress after last month's elections.

Socialist leaders attending a meeting of the European Socialist Party pledged that with the Democrats on the rise, strong ties could be renewed with the United States after years of cool relations with Republican President George W. Bush.

Howard Dean, chairman of the national committee of the U.S. Democratic Party, is attending the two-day conference together with the leaders of leftist governments of several countries and party leaders from across Europe.

"We are not anti-American, we want the real America, your America," former Danish Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, president of the European Socialist Party, said in remarks directed at Dean."

Now if we can only get Bush under control diplomacy might start working for us again. That cretin still doesn't get it that power has shifted in Congress. I'm wondering what kind of legislative hammer Democrats will need to use to get that fool to wake up and smell the coffee.

1. The world breathed a sigh of relief.
And the Republican's can't see why that's a good thing, everything is a zero sum game for them.

Even still, the danger is still high and lingering, but we have stepped back from the precipice of totalitarian evil.

Had Bush/Cheney/Rove chose to push things to the next level (and I wonder if they could have done it, but would have risked breaking cover so they opted not to) by stealing the tremendous numbers of elections required to keep the House, the world was looking at a range of potential scenarios in which even the best case wasn't looking too good.

4. Maybe those socialists could convince the Democratic Party to fight even harder for workers.
America needs to recommit to the New Deal to help those who need help the most. The Democratic Party was foolish to abandon it in favor of neoliberal free trade and weak stances in the face of strong attacks by Wall Street's corporate lackeys on Capitol Hill.
