9. Kirkpatrick quote
"Vietnam presumably taught us that the United States could not serve as the world's policeman; it should also have taught us the dangers of trying to be the world's midwife to democracy when the birth is scheduled to take place under conditions of guerrilla war."

she was not one of the crazy neo-cons we're dealing with nowadays.

She was a Cold Warrior, no doubt. But, the Cold War was going on, and I'm glad we outlasted the Soviets on that one.

44. agreed. and compare her to
condi rice.

Kirkpatrick had experience, insight, knowledge and a deeper understanding of the world.
You may have disagreed with her, but she spoke from experience in a knowledgable fashion. I really don't mind listening to people with whom I disagree. Especially when they know a bit about the subject.

Condi, is the antithesis of that kind fo experience. A manufactured PR product, her experience is thinner than the microscopic layer of diamond dust ingrained on a Japanese sculpting tool sharpener I have. Shallow, culturally illiterate, dense and frightened of her own shadow. and far worse for American than Kirkpatrick ever was.

18. Did you know she was a socialist who belonged to a Marxist group?
Jeane Jordan Kirkpatrick (November 19, 1926 - December 8, 2006) was an American conservative political scientist. After serving as Ronald Reagan's foreign policy adviser in his 1980 campaign, she was nominated as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and was the first woman to hold this position. An ardent anticommunist, she is famous for her "Kirkpatrick Doctrine," which advocates U.S. support of anticommunist governments around the world, including authoritarian dictatorships. Along with Empower America co-directors William Bennett and Jack Kemp, she called on the Congress to issue a formal declaration of war against the "entire fundamentalist Islamic terrorist network" the day after the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center.

Biography

Born Jeane Duane Jordan in Duncan, Oklahoma, she graduated from Barnard College in 1948 after transferring from Stephens College, and received a doctorate in political science from Columbia University in 1968. During her early academic career she was a Marxist, joining the youth section of the Socialist Party of America. At Columbia her principal adviser was Franz Neumann, a revisionist Marxist. In 1967, she joined the faculty of Georgetown University, and became a full professor of political science in 1968.

She became active in politics as a Democrat in the 1970s, and was active in the later campaigns of former Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Hubert Humphrey. Kirkpatrick published a number of articles in political science journals reflecting her disillusionment with the Democratic Party, and was especially critical of the foreign policy of Democratic President Jimmy Carter. She eventually left the Democratic Party, and joined the Republicans, but not until 1985.

In 1980, though still a long time Democrat, she became the foreign policy adviser for the Republican presidential candidate, Ronald Reagan, during his campaign. After winning the election, Reagan nominated Kirkpatrick as United States Ambassador to the United Nations, a position she held for four years.

She was one of the strongest open supporters of Argentina's military dictatorship following the March 1982 Argentine invasion of the United Kingdom's Falkland Islands, which triggered the Falklands War. Kirkpatrick sympathized with Argentina's President Gen. Leopoldo Galtieri whose military regime clamped down on leftists (see Dirty War). Her support was basically muted when the administration ultimately decided to declare support for the British (see U.S. shuttle diplomacy during the Falklands War).

At the 1984 Republican National Convention, Kirkpatrick delivered the memorable "Blame America First" speech, in which she praised the foreign policy of the Reagan administration and excoriated the leadership of the "San Francisco Democrats" for the party's shift away from the policies of former Democratic presidents such as Harry S. Truman and John F. Kennedy to a multilateral stance that de-emphasized assertive confrontation with foreign rivals, especially the so-called evil empire.

In 1985 Kirkpatrick became a Republican and returned to teaching at the Jesuit Georgetown University. She became a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, a Washington D.C think tank and a contributor to the American Freedom Journal. In 1993 she co-founded Empower America, a public-policy organization. She is also on the advisory board of the National Association of Scholars, a think tank which works against liberal bias in academia, multicultural education, and Affirmative Action policies.

After a period of illness, she died on December 8th, 2006.

23. "Nearly 700 At ZOA Dinner.....(2002)
Hear Jeane Kirkpatrick, Cal Thomas Warn Against Dangers Of Palestinian State"

NEW YORK- An audience of nearly 700 attended the Zionist Organization’s annual Justice Louis D. Brandeis dinner, at which Dr. Jeane Kirkpatrick (former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations) and Cal Thomas (the most widely-syndicated newspaper columnist in America) warned that the creation of a Palestinian Arab state would endanger Israel’s existence.

The keynote address was delivered by Ambassador Kirkpatrick, who is the Leavey Professor of Government at Georgetown University and a Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. Dr. Kirkpatrick authored the introduction to the recent ZOA publication, The Case Against Arafat.

25. She Was Also On The Board Of CLI
which is thought to be an offshoot of PNAC, and associated with AEI. I also, disagred with her on her take of *'s speech to the UN"

"JEANE KIRKPATRICK: Let me say that I think the President's speech was very important. It was very important because it's was an effective and clear explanation of the U.S. case, if you will, the case against Iraq. And that's one thing. And for another, I think the president's statement, speech was important because it did make very clear, because he said and it reiterated it, that if the U.N., if the U.N. has an obligation to act, because they had passed so many resolutions, 16 resolutions, he reviewed them, which Saddam Hussein had violated.

MARGARET WARNER: But did that make the other members resentful, or have some other effect?

JEANE KIRKPATRICK: No, I think that the President's visit to the U.N. made a very positive impression, actually, and continues to make a positive impression."

28. She was an odd bird.
In many ways, her morphing from a democrat to a republican, circa '79-80, was one of the events that helped make the neoconservatives more acceptable to a large segment of the American people. Her article "Dictatorships and Double Standards" (Commentary magazine), on her beliefs that the Carter administration erred in dealing with Iran, etc, would be given to Reagan in the days when the neoconservatives were looking to use him, like Bush2, as a means to power. Reagan, as a former democrat, reached out to her, and by 1980 she changed camps.

I think that as terrible as her becoming a neoconservative was, she was a more honest and articulate spokesperson for their cause than snakes like Wolfowitz and Perle, and hence was able to make their agenda more mainstream.

She remains perhaps the coldest example of the advocates of Locke's philosophy on natural law; Malthus' theories on population growth and natural resources; and what we might call the republican theory of social evolution.

on this: "I think that as terrible as her becoming a neoconservative was, she was a more honest and articulate spokesperson for their cause than snakes like Wolfowitz and Perle, and hence was able to make their agenda more mainstream." And I think that's what makes the latter part of her career rather sad. She had stature and she loaned it to those who were less than worthy.

34. Remember the SatNightLive skit with Nora Dunn as JK? It was a game show...
like "Jeopardy!" but the 'correct' answers were determined by surveys of high school students?

It was a riot. Dunn, as JK insisted on giving the actually correct answers. She finally caught on and started responding with answers like "The Soviet Union is the country just South of Texas," etc.

It was a riot.

Her husband, Evron S. Kirkpatrick damn near ruined political science as head of the APSA. Under his 'leadership' the American Political Science Reveiw pubished no articles about the Vietnam War or Watergate into the late 70s. He's 'credited' with taking politics out of political science.
