16 car pile up in New Orleans because of Ice |
|
on overpass. Freezing temps this AM. Interstate closed between Metairie into New Orleans. Anyone familiar with I-10 from Metairie at rush hour(s) in the AM know this is a doozy of a cluster. Highway department putting sand on ice because highway department doesn't have salt. Sand ain't working.

1. Same thing happens here in Austin |
|
They don't have enough sense to slow down. I've driven clear across town here in snow and ice. The only problems I had was the idiots on the road who didn't know how to drive on ice.

3. I'll bet there are a couple of SUVs in that pileup |
|
They seem to have a particular problem with the concept of slowing down when the road is icy or wet--does sitting up so high give the driver a sense of immortality? Earlier this year, just after it started to rain, a Hummer came flying across the median, totaled three cars, and sent someone to the hospital via helicopter. Fortunately, I saw it coming in time, hit the gas, and lost only my left tailight.

5. Too many inexperienced drivers have SUVs |
|
In the hands of someone who knows what he or she is doing, the 4WD capability can make them much safer on ice than most regular passenger cars.
SUVs are not for beginners, and they are not for youthful drivers who have that feeling of invincibility.

9. It's called risk homeostasis |
|
Believe I spelled that right. It's where a drop in risk in one area causes you to take greater risks in other area. The popular example is where a group of German taxicabs were fitted with anti-lock brakes and the others weren't. With the risk of brakes locking up reduced, drivers took greater risks in other areas and ended up having more accidents. Same reason why many anti-smoking campaigns don't save lives. People stop smoking but assume that leaves them free to eat fattier foods or stop exercising.
Not that this should be any reason not to get an SUV. Not a fan of the anti-SUV jihadists who don't like people with better stuff.

That describes the occupants of the Hummer that hit me perfectly: A young couple, and the girlfriend was driving!

4. Oh my. What a mess that must be. I remember I-10 from Metarie |
|
and I sure as hell wouldn't want to be there at rush hour in a car pile up. I hope everyone is OK.:scared:
Yesterday morning it was bitter cold here in Illinois and overnight we had a light dusting of snow. I left to take my son to school and at a stop light on my way, 2 cars collided and one of them spun-out on the slick road. Since that was on my route to the school, I backed up, turned around and went another route and as I pulled up to the corner at another stop light 1 car rear-ended another car HARD because of the slick road! Within a matter of 5 minutes I saw 2 accidents because people didn't realize that the snow on top of the bitter cold made for VERY slick roads.....and apparently, the village didn't realize they needed to be out with the salt trucks.:(
Winter driving sucks. I always worry more about getting hit by a crazy jerk who doesn't know how to drive in the winter. I worry more about THEIR driving than mine. I drive slow and cautiously.
