EPA Scrubbing Library Website to Make Reports Unavailable
Agency Sells $40,000 Worth of Furniture and Equipment for $350

In defiance of Congressional requests to immediately halt closures of library collections, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is purging records from its library websites, making them unavailable to both agency scientists and outside researchers, according to documents released today by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER). At the same time, EPA is taking steps to prevent the re-opening of its shuttered libraries, including the hurried auctioning off of expensive bookcases, cabinets, microfiche readers and other equipment for less than a penny on the dollar.

In a letter dated November 30, 2006, four incoming House Democratic committee chairs demanded that EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson assure them "that the destruction or disposition of all library holdings immediately ceased upon the Agency's receipt of this letter and that all records of library holdings and dispersed materials are being maintained." On the very next day, December 1st, EPA de-linked thousands of documents from the website for the Office of Prevention, Pollution and Toxic Substances (OPPTS) Library, in EPA's Washington D.C. Headquarters.

Last month without notice to its scientists or the public, EPA abruptly closed the OPPTS Library, the agency's only specialized research repository on health effects and properties of toxic chemicals and pesticides. The web purge follows reports that library staffers were ordered to destroy its holdings by throwing collections into recycling bins.

Meanwhile, in what appears to be an effort to limit Congressional options, EPA is taking steps to prevent the re-opening of the several libraries that it has already completely shuttered. In its Chicago office, which formerly hosted one of the largest regional libraries, EPA ordered that all furniture and furnishings (down to the staplers and pencil sharpeners) be sold immediately. Despite an acquisition cost of $40,000 for the furniture and equipment, a woman bought the entire lot for $350. The buyer also estimates that she will re-sell the merchandise for $80,000.

"One big irony is that EPA claimed the reason it needed to close libraries was to save money but in the process they are spending and wasting money like drunken sailors," Ruch added, noting EPA refuses to say how much it plans to spend digitizing the mountains of documents that it has removed from library shelves. "While the Pentagon had its $600 toilet seat and $434 hammer, EPA has its 29 cent book case and file cabinets for a nickel."

if the american people don't drag the neo cons out of the W.H. and govt. bldgs and put them in prison immediately, we deserve to lose our country.

how stupid can we be?

1. We all knew BushCo hated the EPA
but sheesh - It would be great to have them all arrested. Going by their rules - we wouldn't even have to charge them. Just lock them up.

2. yet another impeachable offense, imo . . .
destroying the products of research paid for with my dollars without the consent of Congress . . .

okay, maybe not impeachable in and of itself, but certainly part and parcel of a larger pattern of illegality, deceit and waste that would have had any corporate CEO fired years ago . . .

11. Makes you wonder the kind of deal the Feds will get when it "privatizes" public infrastructure
I read on another thread today the Wall Street anticipates big deals as the Feds sell off public projects. Not only is it wrong to do so, but we'll get screwed in proce$$.

14. Everytime I go to an auction (which is a lot) there are always...
others there bidding like mad men. I guess I'll have to try the government auctions next. They must start the bidding at a $1.00.

16. Government auctions are by far the best if you want stuff cheap
There used to be great ones when I lived in Kansas City. Everyone seemed to want the furniture, so the electronic stuff (that I was there for) was super cheap.

Search for 'GSA Auction' on google.

7. When the nazis were forced into retreat, they'd destroy everything they couldn't take
They'd rip up railroads, blow up bridges, block roads with trees, and cut communication lines. They even experimented with poisoning the land and water.

Insurers Balk at Halliburton's Asbestos Exit Plan
January 12, 2004

In mid-December 2003, Houston-basedHalliburton Company filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings for several of its subsidiaries, including DII Industries (formerly known as Dresser Industries Inc.) and Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR), in an effort to resolve liabilities related to asbestos and silica claims. However, a group of insurance carriers who say they would be left holding much of the payout bag for Halliburton's settlement responded with a request for the court to put the brakes on Halliburton's plan.

The bankruptcy proceedings were filed in Pittsburgh, Pa., according to an announcement released by Halliburton on Dec. 16, 2003. The company said the affected subsidiaries will continue to be wholly owned by Halliburton and will continue normal operations. Halliburton's Energy Services Group and KBR's government services
business are not part of the bankruptcy filing.

The petition evolved from a proposed reorganization plan approved by 386,00 asbestos claimants and over 21,000 silica claimants through a voting process. According to the company, of the votes validly cast, over 98 percent of asbestos claimants and over 99 percent of silica claimants accepted the proposed plan. The total amount of the settlement is expected to be over $4 billion.

The agreement reached with representatives of asbestos and silica claimants limits to $2.775 billion the cash required to settle pending claims subject to definitive agreements. Additionally, DII Industries agreed to pay $326 million of the $2.775 billion cash amount prior to the Chapter 11 filing.

15. IMHO, if we don't drag these thugs out
and SUMMARILY EXECUTE THEM FOR THEIR CRIMES we don't deserve to live, ourselves. (But of course we can't do that. It would be "illegal".)

OMG. Bush has obviously ordered the EPA and all its research data thrown down the memory hole.

It's official. This is a criminal enterprise, NOT an "administration".

21. basically, a form of looting
Destroying, or giving away the critical assets to persons unknown -- assets which are the property of the American taxpayer. Not to mention dispersing or laying off the staff. It sure sounds like deliberately "taking steps to prevent the re-opening".

nephew's sister-in laws needed some office furniture. Or something. Nepotism is the Bush Administrations' way, so it sounds likely.
