Father of Chelsea's Boyfriend in Prison for Fraud, Scams

If reports are true that Chelsea Clinton and her boyfriend Marc Mezvinsky are considering marriage, the father of the groom won't be able to attend the wedding until he is released from prison in November 2008.

Ed Mezvinsky, a former Iowa Congressman, is serving a seven-year sentence for fraud after getting caught up in a series of Nigerian e-mail scams.

Initially, Mezvinsky became the victim of "just about every different kind of African-based scam we've ever seen," federal prosecutor Bob Zauzmer told 20/20 for a report to be broadcast this evening.

But then, says Zauzmer, Mezvinsky began to steal from clients and even his own mother-in-law to raise the money to try yet another scheme.

"He was always looking for the home run. He was always trying to find the business deal that would make him as wealthy as all the people in his social circle," said Zauzmer.

2. Is that story a bit confusing, or is it just me?

What I'm getting from it, is that this guy was scamming
major $$$ from people, so he could hand it over to people who
were running the "Nigerian Scam" on him...

Again and AGAIN and AGAIN.

I find this hard to believe, that he could REPEATEDLY be so stupid.
If he's that damn DUMB, how did he ever have any $$$ in the first place?

3. I was wondering the same thing. He'd have to be one of the biggest morons

ever to be scammed like the article implies. I'd expect that from my grandmother, not from a past Democratic Congressmen.

There's got to be more to the story.

4. now this is interesting...

the 'story' is not about this former congressman serving a seven-year sentence for fraud. The 'story' is that his son is dating Chelsea Clinton. Am I supposed to care? About either? The dude is already in jail, which is more than I can say about some far more capable embezzlers still running our government. I bet I could spit in DC, and have very good odds of hitting a fraudster.

Marjorie Margolis-Mezvinsky although she represented Pennsylvania. She famously cast the deciding vote on Clinton's 1993 Budget while Republicans chanted "Good bye, Margie".

the sins of the parents shouldn't be forced upon the kids. Time will tell if the son takes after the father, but I won't judge Marc Mezvinsky for his father's stupidity and greed.
