In his book, AK-47: The Weapon That Changed the Face of War, author Larry Kahaner traces the rifle’s role in wars from Vietnam to Iraq. According to Kahaner, no tool in the history of warfare has spread so much raw power to so many people in such a small amount of time. Mr. Kahaner discusses the book with Peter Singer, who directs a project on 21st century warfare for the Brookings Institution.

During Q&A, Mr. Traub discusses the recent resignation of John Bolton, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

Craig Nelson

Biographer Craig Nelson appeared on The Book Guys radio show to discuss the life and writings of Thomas Paine. Paine was the author of the influential pamphlets "Common Sense" and "The Rights of Man." The author argues that Thomas Paine has not been given the credit he deserves as a founding father of the United States. During the discussion, the author answers questions from callers.

Craig Nelson is the author of three previous books, including "Let's Get Lost" and "Bad TV." His writings have appeared in Salon.com and other publications.

A 1946 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Jimmy Carter served in the navy until his father's death in 1953, when he took over the family farm in Plains, Georgia. He was a Georgia State Senator and Georgia's Governor, prior to running for President. Jimmy Carter was elected President of the United States in 1976 and served from 1977 to 1981. In 1982 he founded the Carter Center in Atlanta. The Carter Center's mission is to resolve conflict, promote democracy, protect human rights, and prevent disease around the world. President Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Nathan Tabor discusses his book, "The Beast on the East River," at Regent University in Alexandria, Virginia. The book takes a critical look at the United Nations. Mr. Tabor argues that the UN hopes to establish a New World Order that limits the sovereignty of the United States. He says that the UN should be abolished and replaced with an organization that allows for dialogue between nations but does not have the power to infringe on the rights of the United States and its citizens. Includes Q&A.

Nathan Tabor is the founder of The Conservative Voice, where his weekly column appears (www.theconservativevoice.com). Mr. Tabor, who is based in North Carolina, made an unsuccessful bid for Congress in 2004.

PEN American Center's Larry Siems makes introductory remarks.

Until her death on October 7, 2006, Anna Politkovskaya was special correspondent for Russia's Novaya Gazeta. She is the the author of "A Small Corner of Hell: Dispatches from Chechnya," "The Dirty War," and "Putin's Russia: Life in a Failing Democracy."

From the Association of the United States Army annual conference in Washington, DC, John Scales recounts the history of Major General William T. Sherman's Atlanta Campaign of 1864. Mr. Scales examines the way Sherman planned the invasion and maneuvered his troops.

John Scales served in the U.S. Army in 1970 after completing Reserve Officer Training. He was awarded a Bronze Star Medal for his service in Vietnam. Currently, he is a Deputy Commanding General for the United States Army Special Forces Command in Ft. Bragg, North Carolina.

Lightning Man: The Accursed Life of Samuel F.B. Morse

"Lightning Man" is Kenneth Silverman's biography of Samuel F.B. Morse, inventor of the electric telegraph. In an interview from 2003, the author describes Mr. Morse as an easily depressed man who dabbled in inventing. Mr. Silverman explains that although Samuel F. B. Morse's first love was painting, in 1843 he secured funds from Congress to construct the first telegraph line in the U. S. from Baltimore to Washington D.C.

Kenneth Silverman is an english professor at New York University. He is the author of "A\ Cultural History of the American Revolution," "Edgar A. Poe: Mournful and Never-ending Remembrance," "Houdini!!! The Career of Ehrich Weiss" and "The Life and Times of Cotton Mather;" winner of the Bancroft Prize in American History and the Pulitzer Prize for Biography.

She has raised more than $35 million from performances of "The Vagina Monologues," which goes towards stopping violence against women. Eve Ensler won an Obie Award in 1996 for her play "The Vagina Monologues."

American Speeches: Political Oratory from the Revolution to the Civil War and Abraham Lincoln to Bill Clinton

From St. Peter's Church in New York City, the Library of America and the Toward International Peace through the Arts (TIPA) Project present "Election Eve Oratory" to celebrate the publication of "American Speeches." Editor Ted Widmer is joined by several presenters to read some of the most notable speeches in American history, which are published together in the the two-volume compilation. "American Speeches" includes Thomas Jefferson's First Inaugural Address, Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and Elizabeth Cady Stanton's Address to the Woman's Rights Convention.

Ted Widmer is the Director and Librarian of the John Carter Brown Library at Brown University and the author of "Martin Van Buren" and "Young America: The Flowering of Democracy in New York City." He was director of speechwriting at the National Security Council and a senior advisor to President Clinton from 1997 to 2001.

From the National Press Club in Washington, DC, a discussion of Google's Print program, which was annouced by the company in December of 2004 and whose legality is currently being challenged in court. Google is scanning the books of several major libraries (including the New York Public Library and the libraries of Harvard, Standford, and Oxford universities) into the Google database in an effort to make these books searchable on the web, even if the books are currently under copyright protection. Many authors and publishers say that this amounts to theft. The panelists look at the issues surrounding the program and talk about what this might mean for the future of publishing.

Marvin Kalb is a senior fellow at Harvard University's Shorenstein Center. Allan Adler is the Vice President for Legal and Governmental Affairs at the Assoc. of American Publishers. Paul Aiken is the executive director of the Authors Guild. Andrew Glass is the senior editor of the Capitol Leader. David Robbins is a novelist and author of "Souls to Keep." Former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death in early November for crimes against humanity. In "Saddam on Trial" co-authors Michael Scharf and Gregory McNeal discuss the trial's legitimacy and describe the roles they played in preparing the Iraqi High Tribunal for the first of several planned court cases. This event was hosted at Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Lyndhurst, Ohio.

Michael Scharf is a law professor and director of the Frederick K. Cox International Law Center at Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Scharf served as a member of the international team of experts that provided training to the judges and prosecutors of the Iraqi High Tribunal. In 2005 he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to help in the prosecution of war criminals. Gregory McNeal is senior fellow in Terrorism and Homeland Security and assistant director of the Institute for Global Security Law and Policy at Case Western Reserve University School of Law. Mr. McNeal has served as executive editor on the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy and his editorials have appeared in the Washington Times, National Review Online and the New York Times. During the Saddam Hussein trial, Gregory McNeal served as part of the international academic consortium that provided legal memoranda to the Iraqi High Tribunal.

James Parkinson and Lee Benson

James Parkinson and Lee Benson chronicle the life of WWII soldier Harold Poole and his legal battle, along with other POWs, to seek restitution from Japanese companies that used them for slave labor following the Bataan Death March of April 1942. In the Bataan Death March, the Japanese soldiers marched Mr. Poole and other POWs 85 miles in Manila's blistering heat and then shipped them to work as slaves for private Japanese corporations. Approximately 1,000 American soldiers died on the march. During the event, Sen. Orrin Hatch discussed his support of legislation that will help American WWII veterans who were enslaved receive compensation for their labor. This event was hosted by Deseret Book Company in Salt Lake City, UT.

James Parkinson is a trial lawyer who was co-lead counsel in the JPOW case. He graduated from Brigham Young University and has law offices in Palm Desert, California. Lee Benson is a newspaper columnist for the Deseret Morning News in Salt Lake City. He is also the author of a number of books on subjects as diverse as the Olympic Games and the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart. He is a graduate of Brigham Young University and a Utah native.

50. What happened to the man. Was he always such a bushbot?
His last book which crapped all over global warming was impossible to read. Now he has this new one out about stem cells and I cannot even watch him talk about it much less pick up the book.
