3. You know, I spent a few minutes...
...thinking about it, recalling the etymology class I took in college, and hoping — for the cartoonist's sake, at least — that there was some sort of visual pun or double entendre.

Sadly, no.
And, what's worse, it's not even funny.

16. Umm, poor literacy rates aren't the provence of the "flyover states" OK
I live in Missouri, one of the "flyover states", and apparently our literacy rate exceeds that of many, many other states. Meanwhile, New York rates below many, many other states. <http://www.accessmylibrary.com/coms2/summary_0286-12649879_ITM>

"Massachusetts and Missouri have significantly higher average adult literacy rates than the nation as a whole, while New York is significantly lower, and rates in Maryland and Kentucky mirror those of the nation at large. "

Trouble with stereotypes is that they can come back and bite you on the ass. Cartoonists and editors can screw up no matter where they live. And the ensuing joke can be made without referencing stereotypes commonly held by coastal and urban denizens who have little to no clue of what really goes on out here in the Midwest, basing their opinions on decades old stereotypes, passing judgment as they flyover:eyes:
