Subject: The Gay Marriage Debate in Canada

Before anyone starts clamouring to congratulate our House of Commons for voting down Stephen (Harp Seal) Harper's bid to re-open the gay marriage debate let me explain to you what this animal is doing...

He is (with the aid of Karl Rove's proteges---I'm not kidding on that) making a valiant attempt to galvanize the religious right in this country. He is literally attempting to start what Bush 41 started in the US. This is not a fun time in Canada.

Since his election, he has stolen billions from Canadians by dis-allowing and disbanding existing income trusts. Through his belief that a higher dollar is better, he cost the Alberta oil industry 23 billion within the first three months of his mandate. Then he pulled out of KYOTO and cost the nation billions in foreign investment. For example, in Alberta--our oil capital--and a place where environmentalism is key--two environmental firms from the UK who were both ready to commit to 1 billion in provincial investment, left. That's right... They just up and screwed off. How many jobs is that?! Harper didn't care.

Lake Athabasca is dropping like a stone. The natives can barely feed themselves. The hunting grounds are being depleted with smog and air pollution. The rivers are officially poisoned. Just ask Dr. David Suzuki.

Harper is as mean-spirited and evil as your American president is stupid. His only goal is to de-stabilize Canada and set us on a path for separation and or an opportunity for America to annex us.

His predecessor Brian The Thief Mulroney started it. Harper has full intention of killing Canada. It's the neo-con dream up here.

1. I'm pleased that the Liberal Party now has a leader.
Maybe there will be new elections soon. This American hopes so and hopes that Harper and his neocons are defeated.

2. Here's the thing. Harper lost on gay marriage. It's a permanent defeat.
The Liberals allowed a free vote and there was still a 50 vote gap when the final tally was done. There's nothing to tar the Liberals with; there's no way Harper can say that Parliament has spoken and the debate should be re-opened. The debate has utterly slammed shut. It's not like Canadian law (and the Canadian constitution) would have allowed Parliament to re-open the issue in a legal sense anyway, but Harper didn't want to admit that because of, well, politics. So he made his gamble. He lost. The door was slammed in his face, for good.

3. And that is the long term plan our neo-cons have been putting together
here. They think it is the only way they will be able to compete, and hence to continue our style of living here at the expense of the rest of the world, with the rising economy's or China and other nations and the EU. And while I agree that one day nationalism will be a thing of the past, I am sure that these people don't have altruistic motives for implementing their plan.

5. The "income trust" cancellation is no neocon dream
It was a way for corporations to avoid paying billions of dollars in tax.

It was essentially a financial investing tool that had a tax loophole in it. Of course, major corporations twisted that loophole to ridiculous proportions.

The business and investor class howled about it.

It was totally uncharacteristic of Harper to do that.

7. Agreed in the long term this is probably the best thing especially
considering the banks were also looking at this tax structure. While I am no great fan of Harpers I hardly think he is like Bush.

6. I don't like to oversimplify, however...
now is the time for Canada to vote with the lesser of two evils mentality. Unless, of course, you can come up with some viable left-leaning candidates.

Which reminds me, this past St. Jean Baptiste Day in Montreal, Ken Dryden was marching with us downtown. What do you suppose is the significance of this? Was it just stumping for his shot at the Liberal leadership or something more? He intrigues me. How much attention did he get during the leadership campaign?
