Which will you pay more attention to in 2007: Congressional investigations or the 2008 election?
Edited on Sat Dec-09-06 03:32 PM by Ignacio Upton
Unlike 2003 when I just wanted to move on to 2004 because of the drubbing we got in the 2002 midterms and because of the Iraq War, I honestly don't want to think about 2008 right now...but the prospect of having a front runner who could possibly reverse our Congressional majorities in 2008 and is in a situation where at least 45% of the voters definitely won't vote for her, his a concern of mine.

Nevertheless, 2007 will bring a lot of bad news for the Bush Administration. Bush will hopefully be where Nixon was in 1973-1974. I want to see how they will approach things like the pre-war intelligence and the post-war corruption. I want to see how they will handle torture, signing statements, and Cheney's energy task force.

Unlike 2003 when the race was a distraction from bad news, 2008 is a nuisance because I want to think about investigations of Bush even more than I do the prospect of Hillary destroying our party in 2008 if she gets nominated.

1. The Democratic conduct in 2007 will be uppermost in my mind.
I consider the new Congress to be an "audition" for '08. If the nation sees that we are the grownups, responsible, fair, honest and can "git 'er done" it will lay the foundation for another great win in '08. We cannot afford to screw up in any facet of this new opportunity. If we do this right we could be in the majority for many years ahead. It needs to be done correctly and those in charge need to be "detail oriented." That may sound silly but it's those minor things that wipe out the good major things. A silly thing like four women showing up at a party in the same dress. I live in West Palm and used to be secretary in Palm Beach. You can bet your sweet ass this NEVER happens at the galas and charity balls, at least not that I've heard of. Silly, I know, but you get the point. Here's our chance, let's not blow it.

2. Definitely congressional
investigations. This is what we voted for and if they do their job '08 will go well for us. We have to show that we can actually govern before any dem can be elected again, if they don't then it will be more of the same. It isn't all about elections it's about what they do when they get there.

3. I look forward to constant entertaining by the continuous investigations
in the coming year! I suspect the media and a few on Du will keep me updated on what's happening with 08, but I will see that as a distraction from my favorite shows on cspan!!!!! All those hearings will keep a perpetual smile on my face!

4. '08 isn't even really on my radar now..
Edited on Sat Dec-09-06 03:43 PM by annabanana
We all know that one week real-time is about 6 months in political time. Perception is massaged in the media to such a degree that nothing, NOTHING said about '08 means squat until, say June of that year.

We have a lot to watch between now and then. I would say that the #1 job of the netroots right now is to keep our guys' feet to the fire. We'll see how they do, and THEN talk about '08...

.........know what I mean?

5. I'll pay attention to both. I have to - I'm in Iowa and the Iowa caucuses
are in January 2008. I'd be an idiot to not pay attention until 2008.

I am extremely interested in both the investigations AND who will be the potential Democratic (and Republican) nominee.

I don't think this is an either/or issue.

We can walk and chew gum at the same time.

Plus, the nominations don't occur in a vacuum.

The existing political atmosphere created by the investigations and revelations will effect the nominations. How? I'm not sure but I bet they will.

6. Congressional investigations are CRUCIAL
Right now the 2007 Congressional investigations leading to impeachment are CRUCIAL. If the people we put in power are too spineless to obey the will of the people and impeach these criminals, I'd daresay we might not have much to look forward to as to as a Party.

9. Impeachment hearings. Only Impeachment hearings. The fight for impeachment is THE fight to watch.

The case for impeachment is http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=2882573&mesg_id=2886048">100% public record.

The fight for impeachment is THE fight to watch.

Impeachment hearings are the ONLY hearings that will get massive coverage.

10. 2007
if nothing is done, then what happens in 2008 is moot. I think the Dems have a golden opportunity to show America that they want to get things done, and if they do it, we'll see a Dem in the WH in 2008. If not, I see people voting third party or Unity08 in disgust, and the distinct possibility that the repukes will be back in power.
