Blood Diamonds

BLOOD DIAMONDS

Group:
New movie out called "Blood Diamonds" a must see. I've followed this horrible story for quite a few years Pat Roberson, Bush 1 and others won't be happy about this movie.
.
Diamonds are a girls best friend or are they?
.
Video

.
Frontline had a special on this Bob Arnot but it's been removed from google...can't find it any more.
.
Congress passed a law a year or so ago to address this huge problem of Blood Diamonds also known as Conflict Diamonds and outlaw them BUT the law didn't go far enough.
.
The loophole in this law that is being used; once a diamond is put into a setting it is no longer illegal, Well there's a site above to tell you more.
.
This movie will bring this problem again to the forefront, good.

1. yep - more effects of colonialism by the Europeans
The supply is controlled by the DeBeers cartel. Cecil Rhodes and all that colonialism, exploiting Africa's raw materials as usual. Cubic crystalline carbon is not that rare.

I have a couple of GIA certificates, including diamond grading. The crap they sell at the mall is not worth taking home. I worked at a lease dept. "Fine Jewelry" in a dept store where the managers did NOT KNOW what a ten-power (10x) loupe was!! That's what you examine a stone with to see how much crud it has in it. :banghead:

Some woman once asked me "Is this stone dirty? It has black spots in it" and I had to say "No, ma'am, that's just the way it is." I wish I could have told her, "No, lady, it's a piece of coal that is a prematurely mined diamond. The black spots are coal. Save your money. Go to a real jeweler."

DeBeers has brainwashed women for decades that they have to have a diamond ring or else. Other stones and substances are far more rare, valuable and beautiful. Like really good rubies, emeralds and nephrite (true jade).

The jewelers are defensive, but I am glad Leo has taken on this cause and made a movie about it. :yourock:

4. Of course they'd leave a loophole
They would dare touch their good buddy Pat Robertson's diamond mines in Africa.

He was never charged despite the evidence... Of course, Robertson funneling $35000 to then Virginia Attorney General Mark Earley's campaign fund had nothing to do with that.

5. I am passing them down
My Grandma's was purchased in 1919. My Mom's in 1947. Mine was bought in 1974. I have two daughters, one of whom is gay. IF, and when, they marry, they can have their pick of the family "jewels".

We are fortunate that these diamonds are already here and in the family.
