The right wing answer to the daily show to air on fox? (it's bad, it's really bad) |

I guess it's rumored that this abomination is going to air on fox? From the article: "The way I look at it, almost every comedy show or satire show I see uses the same talking points against George W. Bush and Dick Cheney," Surnow said. "The other side hasn't been skewered in a fair and balanced way."
They are going to skewer the left in a "fair and balanced way?" Bwahahahaha! I can hardly wait! This is going to be hysterical, only not in the way they are hoping.

There are plenty of funny things to say about Democrats; even some mean-spirited jokes can be genuinely humorous if the delivery is right. Those videos are just abysmal, plain and simple.

as Sideshow Bob on "The Simpsons". But even the conservatives have to agree, most really funny people aren't conservatives. There isn't anyone on your list who compares with Steve Martin, Will Ferrell, Robin Williams, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Harry Shearer, Christopher Guest, Catherine O'Hara, or Ellen DeGeneres And compare the witty writing of Maureen Dowd or Frank Rich with Ann Coulter's clumsily written fifth grade taunts. In fact, what I expect from the Faux comedy show is more Coulter/Rush hate speech. Calling Nancy Pelosi Bela Lugosi. Calling Kerry "Skerry", etc. Doesn't really compare well with Stewart or Colbert, does it? But, hey, that's what the freeper crowd seems to like: funny names. Sounds like a boring show.

Couldn't make it past several minutes of the first youtube link.
I can't imagine what they are thinking. Doesn't seem the people themselves could sit through it. Their desperation has done them in. There's no lightness, no intelligence, no wisdom involved anywhere near this catastrophe. Very forced, rigid, harsh, heavy-handed. Nazi-like.
Just horrible. Leaves you perplexed.

22. They don't understand satire. |
|
Edited on Sat Dec-09-06 06:32 PM by Tansy_Gold
Satire is truth turned on itself in such a way that it shows the absurdity of reality, without denying the reality of that absurdity.
There's nothing absurd about Bill O'Reilly "not belonging" on Oprah. It's not even true -- I can see bill-O going on Oprah, the same way he goes on Letterman. I mean, why not? (Okay, I don't watch Oprah, but she's not that, um, blatantly Dem, is she?) But even so, there's nothing absurd about it.
I don't think people that far on the right even have a sense of the absurd. I mean, good goddess, they LIVE in the sense of the absurd and don't recognize it! "I'm adamantly pro-life except when it comes to blowing up Iraqi babies, frying convicted rapists in Texas whose public defenders slept through their trials and didn't check the DNA records, and letting poor black people in sinful southern cities drown -- and when my daughter really needs an abortion." We see that as absurdity; they see it as. . .. normal.
Satire also has to have a sense of hope lying underneath it, a hope that someone will wake up to the absurdity and change it. I don't think wingnuts have any sense of hope; they just want us all to die and themselves to be raptured.
Ugh, what an ugly way to live. No, what an absurd way to live: waiting to die.

What is it? what is it with us americans, that trivializes politics and war like it's some kind of sporting event? Is the the bullshit wars on poverty, on drugs, on education? Our science produces the findings of the highest bidder, our medicine that is nothing more than the course of statistical probablities? I could go on and on but come on it's just getting embarrasing.

The abomination in the clips we were directed to...imagine the worst Cable Access television show it would be possible to produce. Even the Production sucked. The color balance kept going in and out, the audio kept jumping around in volume, the set sucked (you'd think there'd at least be a logo on the wall or something), costuming was bad, hair and makeup were awful, the three hosts were unwatchable in all respects...
This, we are led to believe, is going to be shown on a national network.

Its that humor doesn't work from a conservative angle. Humor works better when it is from the perpective of the common person speaking to power. The little upstart. Think Charlie Chaplin as the Little Tramp. Now imagine Charlie dressed as a rich tycoon making fun of workers instead. It doesn't work.
Liberal/Progressives own the humor angle. Conservatives don't get that they are not funny.

I wonder what it is about being a conservative that makes it so hard for them to tell jokes, make satire, or do comedic acting. It's as if their lack of subtelty in political matters and worldview translates to comedy; and there subtelty is everything. The show was like hitting someone over the head with a shovel with the punchline (ie: Democrats won because studies show testosterone went down).

I couldn't watch more than 2 minutes. Subtle as a club.
Several replies here have talked about whether cons can do humor, and use this idea to argue they can't. I think I have to agree with them. I think that cons must not understand humor, because this comes off as just vindictive name-calling. Here's what I see the contrast as:
Watch The Daily Show, and you'll see Jon Stewart poking fun at politics. But the reason it works, is that what he does is point out the absurdity and the hypocrisy going on. He does it wherever he sees it too - not just conservatives, because when liberals are behaving badly he holds them to the fire too, and I've seen him do so several times. The fact that this administration is so often shown in a negative light is because they are so hypocritical. There's just more material to work with there. Now, contrast "The America Show" (nice how they claim ownership of America) and all it is is snide comments and name-calling. It comes across the same way as the cheerleaders in high school making nasty remarks about the wannabes when their backs are turned, and it's about the same level of maturity and grace.
See, what they don't get is that Jon Stewart doesn't do politics, he makes fun of politics as comedy. they use 'comedy' (at least they think that's what they're doing) to do politics. It comes off as heavy-handed preaching instead.

...that is to appear on the fux network, then there is no way for me to accept that there are people IGNORANT enough to truly believe this anti-intellectual, brain-damaging abomination is even REMOTELY humorous.
I mean, REALLY, now. This can't be the REAL thing, huh.
