MO Governor Joins War on Christmas
The governor’s decree: ‘Merry Christmas’ OK
By TIM HOOVER
The Star’s Jefferson City correspondent

JEFFERSON CITY | Although it’s been said many times, many ways, Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt has declared that state employees can say it too.

Blunt on Monday issued a directive to department heads asking them to assure state employees they would not be disciplined for saying “merry Christmas.”

“Last year, there was a great deal of public discussion regarding the Christmas season,” Blunt wrote in the memo. “Specifically, we heard from those who believe that the Christmas break should be called by a non-religious name such as ‘Winter Holiday.’ They also argued that traditional Christmas greetings such as “Merry Christmas” should not be used.

“Missouri state government employees should not have to worry about this matter. To ensure that there is no confusion regarding our state policy I am directing that each of you inform all members of your department that they should feel at ease using traditional holiday phrases, including ‘Merry Christmas’ and they should have no fear of official reprisal.

2. Well golly gee...
...I'm tickled. And I fully expect that those that say "Happy Hannauka" <sp> "Merry Kwanza" "Hail Eris" "Thor Be Pleased" "May the Spirit of Winter not slay your family and sheep" and "Satan and His Wintery Elves Be Praised" also not fear official reprisal...

3. I would like to see any evidence that state employees were told the could not say

Merry Christmas. This is just right wing bull shit at it's best IMHO. If I say Merry Christmas to someone it means I hope they have nice holidays. It doesn't mean any more than that to me. If anything the right wing noise machine is taking a lot of fun out of the holidays with their selfish ideology and their hypocritical self victimization.

Merry Christmas everyone and Happy holidays too!

7. Yes that was one of the first things he did
But before that, his wife wore a fur to the inaugural.

10. While I think fur is in bad taste, that alone wouldn't bother me so much.
What bothers me is that this guy is clearly a prick--- and his policies reflect that.

5. I think Missourians are having buyers' remorse about Matt Blunt
However I think Senator-elect McCaskill will enjoy her new job.

6. Yeah, more Blunt Trauma
Man's a goddamn fucking idiot with no common sense and no compassion. Thankfully he has pissed off enough people right, left and center that he will be gone, a one term wonder, in '08. Until then, his effectiveness is fairly limited, thus we see him stooping to such bullshit as this in order to convince himself he's still relevant and in charge. Meanwhile the legislature and more importantly the people continue to work around this obstruction of a govenor.

9. My niece's husband is a Republic lobbyist in Missouri.
And he says the state is being run by 25 year old assholes. Even he is looking forward to getting rid of Blunt.

8. Are you aware that he also has a public service commercial
in which he refers to himself as Commander-in-Chief of the National Guard? Gave me a nasty start this morning. I thought for a minute he was declaring himself President.

11. Actually, what he did was join the WAR ON the "War on Christmas".
The "War on Christmas" doesn't exist, except in the hot air filled heads of some right-wing pundits.
