Italy to recognize gay couples; Vatican says it will "eradicate the family!"

ROME (AFP) - Battle lines were drawn over a plan to grant legal status to gay couples in socially conservative Italy, with the Vatican up in arms along with the right-wing opposition.

L'Osservatore Romano, a Vatican mouthpiece, slammed the plan, warning in an editorial: "Eradicating the family is the priority of Italian politics," while the opposition also pledged to defend the traditional family.

Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi said Thursday that his government would draft legislation on civil unions in the Catholic-majority country by January 31.

He said it would "represent a fundamental step forward" as his center-left Union coalition honors its electoral pledges.

1. Why does the Vatican even bother with press conferences anymore?
We always know what they're going to say before the fact:

Abortions, Gays, and Muslims=bad.
Abstinence, Doctrine, and Movies based on the New Testament=good
Jews=eh......

3. You forgot one: women=dirty and inferior
Of course, nobody asked those celibate old fools why permitting gays to form their own legal families would disrupt straight families any more than the Vatican's lifestyle of celibacy for its officials has. After all, for every celibate male in a dress, there may be a woman who never produces virgins for the church.

Full :sarcasm:

5. Eradicate?
See, this is why you need more married clergy, like in our church (we have both--Eastern Orthodox). It humanizes them. Living as a monastic, away from people with all their mess and pain and hurt and love and glory, just makes you more likely to dehumanize those very people Christ came to talk with and save. The best priests we've ever had were all married with kids. They knew mess. They knew love. They knew how hard life is when you're doing the best you can, and they know how silly we can get when we're in love and then in a long-term relationship. The most judgemental priests I've known were all celebate monastics. There are a couple who know love and are awesome, but the rest are a bit rigid and judgemental.

9. If financial and legal benefits are the only things propping up marriage, it's not worth saving.
