Here we go again. Our kids are being sent away to a foreign land, not in preservation of OUR way of life, but to preserve and defend the way of life for the wealthiest among us. Again. "It's not about the oil," they tell us, but the ISG report says differently. 61 mentions of oil in the report...how to protect the oil, how to get more of the oil, and how to sustain the oil industry's control of the oil.
Hospitals? Not one mention. Schools? Barely more than that.
This isn't and has never been a "humanitarian" mission. Originally we undertook the war under the auspices of preemptively preventing an attack by WMDs. WMDs that apparently never existed, or had been used a long time ago, even if they did.
When the WMDs didn't surface, it morphed into a "overthrowing a tyrant" cause, except, well, since when were we in the business of overthrowing tyrants anyway? We, the United States, don't exactly have a great record when it comes to our dealings with tyrants. Didn't we treat with Saddam himself, and the Shah of Iran, and Marcos, and the Sauds of Arabia? Tyrants and oligarchs all.
So, no, I don't think this is about overthrowing a tyrant.
Okay, so how 'bout "bringing Democracy to the Middle East?" Ummm. No. Turkey's a democracy. We're pissed at them because the PEOPLE decided they didn't want to be a staging ground for an attack on Iraq. Democracy's all fine and good as long as it does what we tell it. Right? Iran was a Democracy, before we overthrew the government and installed the Shah. Yeah, that worked great, didn't it?
We're treating with warlords in Afghanistan and Iraq because it's easier to prop up warlords than deal with actual democratic movements that might not go along with the plan. See, democracy's a messy business. Too many cooks spoil the broth. We can't pay off ALL the citizens to make them go along with whatever we're cooking up, so it's better to have a few warlords running things we can "entice" into doing what we want.
Iran had a pretty damn good democratic movement up and running, and the moderates were staying out of it, until George W. Bush made his now-infamous "Axis of Evil" speech. That scared the moderates in Iran into siding with the hard-liners in the next election. I mean, Iraq was clearly a target--they were scared that THEY would be next in line.
I'm sure all those students were SO happy with Bush after that. They're the same kids who marched in the street in protest after what was done to us on 9/11.
So where does all this leave us?
Fighting for the oil companies. Our military has become the mercenary arm of the multi-nationals, who are even now raking in HUGE profits on the backs of us at home, while we send our kids out to fight and die for their interests.
It IS about oil. Don't let anyone tell you any different. The ISG report leaves no room for doubt.
And that's all there is to say.
