Sunday Morning, Coming Down...
Jesus don't like killing - no matter the reason for.... (John Prine)

As all the good Christians march off to church this Sunday, many of them will be praying for their President and the troops in Iraq. They will pray for "victory". But there is no "victory" in war - there is only survival.

They will pray for the families that have seen their sons and daughters blown to pieces by acts of violence. But, I wonder who's God they are praying to? The Bible I have read for most of my life does not resemble what these Christians are praying for.

Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not kill. Blessed are the poor. Love thine enemy. Blessed are the peacemakers...Jesus wept.

3. Why is it....
the most "Christian" people I know (those who believe the words of the Sermon on the Mound.."blessed are the peacemakers..etc) NEVER go to church and don't belong to any religion?

I think I know why.....but I won't start a war on this great site.

Nice post Kentuck... :hi:

5. You've been watching too much baseball.
The Sermon was on the Mount, not the Mound.

10. I don't think it would start a war... and I can answer that.
I'm the same kind of Christian - one who believes in Jesus' words during the Sermon on the Mount (not Mound, btw), but I don't go to church because I got tired of them telling me who to vote for. It's pitiful that one cannot go listen to the Word of God without politics being involved.

But here are the Beatitudes, delivered during the Sermon on the Mount... they're beautiful:

* Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Verse 3)
* Blessed are the meek: for they shall posses the land. (Verse 4)
* Blessed are they who mourn: for they shall be comforted. (Verse 5)
* Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill. (Verse 6)
* Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. (Verse 7)
* Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God. (Verse 8)
* Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. (Verse 9)
* Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Verse 10)

2. ...and your flag decal won't get you into heaven anymore.
They should be praying that their president comes to his fucking senses.

4. Darn, I thought this was about Johnny Cash ;-)
Sunday Morning Coming Down is one of my favorite songs by him... But I agree with your post. And they will pray for Jesus to bring them peace... but why should he when they would only abuse that as well? I haven't been to church in years and don't miss it one bit. You don't have to sit in a church to be a person of spiritual wealth. I get more imspiration from a sunrise. I say shame on them for supporting this war that Jesus would never have supported.

8. Sunday Morning Coming Down
Kris Kristofferson wrote it. Johnny loved it, made it famous. He and Kris were lifelong friends after that.

7. Thank you
I was raised in a southern baptist family way back when, born '48. My dad even though he was never a Preacher, started the church '52 which still has services today and I grew up with hell fire and brimstone, I remember one of the Preachers who came from time to time to give a serman or to have a revival, he always gave a real hell fire and brimstone serman, would scare me half to death then, I wonder what it would do to me now, as I am not to be finding out. I lost interest in a God who only liked people who thought and believed as one did, not all inclusive as so many say. I've been half way around the world to hope I make it back to home again. I know what it feels like to be saved and to be baptisted, I know what its like to wonder if today is the day I meet my maker so to say, I know because I was there. Today I would have to consider myself as an agnostic having arrived here after many hours of thought and contemplation.

11. Are you agnostic in the sense that you believe in God, but
not organized religion or in that you're not sure there is a God?

I'm to the point that I believe wholeheartedly in God and the good works of Jesus, but organized religion is nothing but a conduit for politics and the most unGodly thing in existance.

9. If humans believe there will always be war ...
will there always be war?

Doesn't have to be. Our sights aren't set high enough.

We show and teach people into war from an early age.
