I read both of these blog posts, and I felt, oh, what's that word...hope. The worlds Amanda and Chris and the commentators are describing would be worth living in, and worth fighting for. I feel like how the Hebrews must have felt as they listened to Moses describe the promised land.

It's a revolutionary act to imagine a different world. The conventional wisdom would gasp in horror, get the vapors, and then call in the goons if they ever thought there was the merest possibility of guaranteed minimum incomes, or society organized in a sustainable way around water resources, as one commentator proposed.

For my money, the most mind blowing idea was Amanda's discussion of how freeing people from the need to work for the bare necessities would free everyone from a tremendous amount of unjust social control. No more not doing something that doesn't hurt anyone else because you might lose your job if people found out. No more being afraid to speak against those who hold economic power over your life. The mind boggles at the kind of world that would be. It sounds like paradise.

I highly recommend reading both of those posts, and perhaps posting your beautiful, positive vision of the world with liberalism and/or progressivism triumphant. As for me, I say Amen! to big dreams of better ways to fulfill peoples needs for the foreseeable future.

1. My vision of the world is simple:
People working with each other to better themselves and their society.

All we're seeing is a sinking ship mentality. Every man for himself. All one need do is support Cheney and voila, who cares about the rest...

3. The Slow Food/Slow Cities movement
seems to have some interesting ideas about sustainable communities : http://www.commondreams.org/headlines01/0706-03.htm

5. Governments of, by, and for ALL the people would be key.
Everyone who wanted to run for office would be able to do so without having to pawn themselves out to the highest bidder. The voting age would be lowered in order to get kids involved in the political process earlier. The voting system would be secure against electronic shenanigans. The stigma against voting for "unelectable" candidates would disappear, and people would vote their true beliefs, not based on what other people have decided is socially appropriate. People would have all the information they need to make informed decisions about governance at their fingertips, AND THE TIME TO MAKE PROPER USE OF IT.
