Friedman and Kirkpatrick were two of Pinochet's prominent American supporters (other than Nixon and Kissinger...although Tricky Dick has been safely six feet under for twelve years now) and I find it interesting that they all died within a month of each other. Think about it. The dictator, his chief economic mentor, and the woman who would roll out America's welcome mat for him. I wonder when Kissinger will bite the dust?

1. That is spooky
But I think it is just Karma taking out the garbage. Based on that idea, Henry is not long with us.

4. Milton Friedman
Edited on Sun Dec-10-06 06:08 PM by Ignacio Upton
One of the most well known and influential conservative economists. Students of his (the "Chicago Boys") helped institute Pinochet's economic policies, which included union busting, outlawing strikes, and privatizing their equivalent of Social Security (that system that Pinochet created, interestingly, has been touted by right-wingers as a model for privatizing Social Security in this country.)

10. Ah, thank you! I didn't know he had died. Didn't the Neo-Cons also
come out of the U. of Chicago? ("Project for a New American Century" inspired by Leo Strauss, a teacher there.)

Of course, it's probably not the U. of Chicago's fault, as such. Yale gave us Bush.

8. Boy, that Kirkpatrick was a creepo. Harbinger of many creepos to come.
I remember shuddering at her TV blatherings--much the way I shuddered at Reagan. I met him once, when he was still a cheap and talentless actor, known most for his betrayal of his friends during the Army-McCarthy witchhunts. What a dirtbag he was. But anyway I once introduced him as a speaker, back when. And I swear, all the future ghosts in Nicaragua and El Salvador visited me at that moment. An icy chill. I have never had that reaction to anyone before or since (--and I hadn't read David Ickes then, thank you--and he hadn't written his book then either).

Vampires? Ghouls? I don't know where they get these people. Do they scrape them together from the microbes in the scum beneath the surface on Marz, and ship them here in podz?

Oops! I'm making that mistake again of dehumanizing the adversary. Got to realize: there but for the grace of many wonderful people, who have taught us to love justice and democracy, go we...erring into fascism and hubris and unbelievable greed. We are all, every one of us, capable of evil.

13. "We are all, every one of us, capable of evil." Great minds...
"There are no-good guys and bad guys. The struggle is in the mind. We must bury our own monsters and stop condemning people. We are all Christ and Hitler. We want Christ to win. We're trying to make Christ's message contemporary."
