"An Inconvenient Truth" wins Best Documentary from LA Film Critics Assn.
Awards will be given out January 14th.

In its voting Sunday, the group selected Clint Eastwood's "Letters From Iwo Jima," the account of that famous World War II battle as seen from the Japanese side, as best picture, with runner-up going to "The Queen," a contemporary story of the British monarchy.

Meanwhile, critics voted Paul Greengrass best director for the Sept. 11 mid-air drama "United 93." Eastwood finished second for his dual efforts with his war pictures "Iwo Jima" and "Flags of Our Fathers."

As best actor, the group added spice to its annual awards banquet by voting a tie: Sacha Baron Cohen in the politically incorrect, ambush-documentary satire "Borat" and Forest Whitaker as crazed Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in "The Last King of Scotland."

Documentary honors went to Davis Guggenheim's "An Inconvenient Truth," about former Vice President Al Gore's campaign for understanding and enlightenment on global warming. Runner-up was Hubert Sauper's "Darwin's Nightmare."

4. maybe they start the calendar at a different time, for the nomination process
They were also up for an Oscar last time ("March of the Penguins" won).

7. LA Critics award depends upon when you open for a theatrical
run in LA. For example, my film is on the Oscar short list for 2006 with Inconvenient Truth, but b/c it does not start a full theatrical run in LA until Jan. 2007, it will not be eligible for the LA Critics award until 2007. Darwin's Nightmare did the same thing one year earlier.

8. Congrats on being on the short list
Sounds wonderful, I've worked on documentaries before and so I realize how much work, blood, sweat and tears go into projects like that..

Maybe I missed it but what's the name of your film?

Got to be a bitch going up agsinst the 800 lb gorilla that Gore has sprung on the public, at a time when it's one of the top subjects in the world :)

10. Our film is Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore?
Edited on Tue Dec-12-06 04:22 PM by GumboYaYa
Here is our website: www.mrsmithmovie.com Check it out and tell me what you think. We are extremely happy to have made the short list.

It is a labor of love. You are exactly right about blood, sweat and tears. The struggle it takes to get an audience for an independent documentary can ony be appreciated after going through the experience.

If Inconvenient Truth gets a nomination, they will be a juggernaut. We were among five finalists for the International Documentary Association's doc of the year award for 2006. Inconvenient Truth wasn't nominated, but they gave it a special award. The award ceremony was in LA last Friday. Gore was there and all the Hollywood types were all over him.

What many peple do not know is that given the Academy's prferential voting system, it is possible for a film like Inconvenient Truth to not get a nomination.

11. thanks for the explanation!
I knew it had to be something like that. (A friend of mine got nominated just a while ago for the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy, because his 1980s recording didn't get released for 2 decades ...)
