Kucinich urges mass march to end Iraq war
Speaking to hundreds of cheering delegates at the U.S. Labor Against the War conference here Dec. 2, the Cleveland congressman charged that President Bush and the Iraq Study Group seek to thwart the will of the American people as expressed in the Nov. 7 elections.

“2006 was about getting out of Iraq,” Kucinich said. “The opposition to this war is very deep. The American people created the political sea change to take back the House and Senate. But Bush has no intention to get out or change his policies and the Iraq Study Group is window dressing that is trying to buy time.”

Proof of Bush’s intentions, Kucinich said, is his request for an additional $130 billion earmarked for the war in 2007. This is more than the $117 billion allocated in 2006. In addition, Congress allocated $70 billion in September to bridge 2007 war costs until the new budget is approved next June. ..

“This year we can change things,” Kucinich said, “but we need your help.” Congressman James McGovern’s bill to cut the war funding will be reintroduced, he said. “It will be springtime for the peace movement. We need to bring a million people to Washington on the eve of that vote. We must demand an end to war.”

1. Kucinich must be hearing stuff that tells him
"We the People" are going to have to end this war because no one else will do it. ...not good :-( We marched so many times and the Media ignored us.. It wasn't until Cindy Sheehan and then later John Murtha spoke out that anyone listened to us.

We just voted Dems in...it's time for them to stand up and cut off the funds. We've spoken the polls are showng them the American People don't want any more of this WAR...

Yet...we still have to march? What the heck is going on?

Kucinich is doing the right thing- we must make the 'leadership' listen.

we need something like they are doing in Lebanon

Lebanon’s Saniora willing to talk after protest
http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20061210/beirut_protest_061210/20061210?hub=CTVNewsAt11

“…during the tenth day of an open-ended protest to force the resignation…”

By some estimates there were 2 million protesting the US backed gov’t
http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=worldNews&storyID=2006-12-10T165724Z_01_L02375063_RTRUKOC_0_US-LEBANON-GOVERNMENT.xml&WTmodLoc=NewsHome-C3-worldNews-2

Giant loudspeakers blared out nationalist songs and drummers thudded a relentless beat on the 10th day of a round-the-clock protest aimed at forcing Siniora and his Sunni-backed majority to set up a government of national unity.

The noise was clearly audible inside the nearby government headquarters where Siniora and most of his ministers are holed up.

We can do that too!

2. I suggest doing something else.
Edited on Sun Dec-10-06 10:20 PM by liberaldemocrat7
The several marches and rallies over the last 4 years did not end the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

I suggest that whoever wants the war to end, to call, email, and fax REPUBLICAN contributor and WAR contractor General Electric Corporation and say UNTIL YOUR CEO Gets the Bush administration to end this invasion and occupation and brings the troops out of Iraq and in the region instead, YOU will not buy any products from General Electric ( Including Refrigerators, stoves, VCRs, Stereo equipment, light bulbs and other products )

When enough people calls General Electric and threatens their accounts receivables through non support of their products, this occupation will end.

Republicans mainly care about money. Marches will not do it unfortunately.

4. it needs to be a massive march on washington.
other marches in other places might make the marchers feel good- but they are pretty much meaningless, politically.

8. Agree
I've said that before too QuestionAll. Sadly even when we did all get together last Sept it was still ignored. A million won't even work if the million just peacefully disperse when it's over.

20. Agreed, we need to stay
A million people to start. Of those million many will need to be able to stay put and then we need to have a second wave descend down on Washington, and so on. A continued presence is hard for anyone to ignore. The climate is changing no matter how far in the sand the msm has it's head. There are people soon to be in power who will listen to us. We may not have the ear of the whole Democratic party but of those we do, they are finally in a position to do something about it. Like, force the media to pay attention whether they like it or not. Once that happens I don't think we'd have trouble keeping a very large, strong vigil in the DC.

It does mean that we would be making sacrifices. Who can leave their job for that long? That's the first question that inevitable comes up. But then, what kind of crappy job are many of us trying to hang on to in the first place? I don't have health insurance. Vacation time? Retirement plan? What the fuck is that? I see so many of my friends who are up to their eyeballs in school loan debt that can't find a decent paying job. Let alone one with any benefits. If we don't do something soon there is going to be a massive collapse of our people infrastructure. I guess I'm feeling like many of us have very little left to loose. We have a whole generation failing. It fucking sucks!

It's the dirty little secret that no one likes to talk about because I'm sure at some level the previous generation(s) feel some responsibility. Who wants that kind of guilt? I don't want the guilt and it's been blame the children and grandchildren for being such screw ups for quite some time now. Frankly, there's only so much blame I can take anymore. It's killing me, spirit first. I feel like we bought in to what was so slickly sold us and it was a big fat lemon. Got us while we were young and naive. Now I'm just fucking pissed off because how am I suppose to lift up my own children?
March on fucking Washington! It's all many of us have left. /rant off

Edited on Sun Dec-10-06 10:26 PM by marmar
But it almost seems that we're at the point where we've got to starve the war beast - general strikes, civil disobedience, blocking entrances to corporations, NOT BUYING PRODUCTS. In the end, dollar signs are the only thing they see.

More kudos to Dennis Kucinich for not only having convictions but not being afraid to express them. :yourock:

5. And bu$hco will call us a "fringe" group and do what they want anyway.
And what nasty weapons will they use to disperse the crowds? How about Congress cuts off the funds to fuel bu$hco's continued occupation of Iraq? They have more power than we do and we just voted for Congress to ACT!

7. A march will change what, exactly?
I love the guy dearly, but the current war has the distinction of being the only war in the world with massive protests just before it started on every continental land mass on the planet, including Antarctica. That didn't stop Bushco then--why would it now?

15. Put some spine in that Democratic majority we've now got.
The only way that we're going to stop the war at this point is cut the funding, pull the plug. This march may not be so much about swaying the opinion of Bushboy, he'll either be dead drunk or out of town. No, this would be more about letting our Democratic majority know that we the people elected them to end this illegal, immoral war, and that they'd have better stop fucking around, worrying more about their own political career, and pull the goddamn plug, now.

16. This march would be different -- thanks to hero Kucinich
Generally marches and protests have been pretty ineffective since the 1960s. That's because they have been organized and led by people outside traditional politics.

If Kucinich is saying there should be a huge demonstration in which traditional progressive, Democratic politicians take part, that would be something completely different and would launch us into an era of extra-parliamentary politics.

23.  Did'nt we have huge marches against this war ?
Back in march 2003 when all this murder first began with their horrid shock and awe campaign . Since this time all the protest marches have gotten alot smaller in number .

Was it not diificult enough for many to even get off the ass to vote this nov ? How does anyone expect to pull off mass protest marches now ?

Don't get me wrong , I think it one of the only things that will make a difference but I don't see it happening .

I feel if we put all faith in politicians we will get no where ending this war . But even with massive protest bush is still really the only one who can end this murder and he certainly could care less about the protesting citizen . He was handed far too much power , something we seem to have forgotten .

30. There are many more people who have woken up
now than there were in 2003 and many more who are totally disgusted! The possibility for getting a million people in the streets is greater than ever. We may even see the direct participation of other progressive representatives and senators as well as Kucinich.

28. There is a big peace rally planned for Jan 27th
Here's a copy of an email that I just received a few days ago from a peace group that I belong to....I copied and pasted it just as I received it.

Tell the New Congress:

Act NOW to Bring the Troops Home!

Join United for Peace and Justice in a
massive march on Washington, D.C.,
on Sat., January 27, to call on Congress

to take immediate action to end the war.

On Election Day the voters delivered a dramatic, unmistakable
mandate for peace. Now it's time for action. On January 27, 2007,
we will converge from all around the country in Washington,
D.C. to send a strong, clear message to Congress and the
Bush Administration: The people of this country want the
war and occupation in Iraq to end and we want the troops
brought home now!
