1. Uh, a lot worse can happen to people who do this.
A lot worse. There've been plane watcher incidents for instance...

In these times, it's something of a dangerous line of work, in terms of police (or worse) attention.

5. It wasn't his spelling that floored me...
it was his implied "The cops didn't break your camera, OSAMA broke your camera!" logic.

3. 9-11 changed everything
i used to watch and photograph trains years ago but remember 9-11 changed all that. if the gangs and taggers can get close enough and have the time to paint i guess security is`t so great.

4. I got busted for filming all kinds of stuff in my film school days
But that was in the Clinton era, no worries.

"It's for film school officer" "Ok, have fun guys"

8. Some really stupid and paranoid comments there.
"What exactly is railfanning? It sounds like a very odd hobby" People have been doing that forever, it's as "odd" as birding.

9. I used to enjoy photographing the lower Hudson Valley . . .
but I don't do it anymore for fear that something similar would likely happen if I took a shot that included the Bear Mountain Bridge or the Indian Point nuke or West Point -- all integral to the river, but now off limits to casual photographers . . .

11. A hobby is just a hobby,,, railfans, airplane watchers etc

As long as you are not on private lands the police can ask you but IMHO most will understand your hobby.

I just got my second Norfolk Southern wall calendar :)

And all pictures are taken by employees. OK we do have ids that get us a little closer to trains than some folks. :)
