The real picture of tonight
was the arrest of Cindy Sheehan for a T shirt juxtaposed with Bush talking about bringing freedom to the world.
All the things he talked about bringing to the rest of the world, he is taking away at home. It is all crystallized in the
picture of Cindy's arrest while Bush talks about freedom.

2. I have mixed feelings about Cindy, but it is pitiful how afraid Shrub
is of her. I think history will look at her as the beginning of the end of George's great mandate. Back when she was in Texas the first time, I kept thinking."the stupid motherf**ker, all he needed to do was meet with her" and I don't even like him. That was just.plain.stupid.

8. What they did to her tonight was also just plain stupid.
No M$M cameras would've been focussed on Cindy at any point in the evening. Now, though, thanks to the knee-jerk arrest, the entire country knows (or soon will know) that Cindy was arrested simply for wearing a black t-shirt with the number of American soldiers killed in Iraq. A headline at Raw Story says that the morning shows are clamoring to get her on tomorrow morning. http://www.rawstory.com/ America is going to wake up to the news that the wearing of a respectful shirt with a simple number on it put someone in jail for "unlawful conduct." A shirt that Cindy had been wearing all day, apparently, since before she'd even been invited to the SOTU.

5. You were brave to try to watch.
I was driving home when the music started to play. Couldn't reach for the switch fast enough. Did he really have the nerve to talk about tyranny? It's ironic that he doesn't know how ironic that is (or does he)?

11. I'm just randomly choosing a Cindy Sheehan thread to note...
... that at time of writing, 23 out of 80 posts (28%) on page one of GD immediately after the SOTU address refer to Cindy Sheehan. Not bush, but Cindy Sheehan.

Am I wrong in thinking that there is some strangeness in the proportion?

/Disclaimer: I didn't watch the SOTU because I just can't watch/listen to bush.

14. Free speech is apparently no longer fashionable in Washington.
Edited on Wed Feb-01-06 02:40 AM by BrightKnight
Cindy almost always wears a t-shirt like that. (google Cindy pictures.)

Would she have been arrested for wearing this?

Wearing a suit or dress is political.
A lapel pin is political.
A yellow fish ribbon is political.

Are we are going to start arresting all of the politicians and guests in Washington that make non-verbal political statements during the state of the union address?

Who decides what speech is appropriate and what is not? I thought that free speech was the American answer to that question.
