Cindy Sheehan is a Genius - she was able to do what no other person
Edited on Wed Feb-01-06 12:41 AM by stop the bleeding
or group could do, whether it was intentional or not.

To bring attention to where it needs to be.

The Iraq War and why we are there.

Think about it - she stole little *'s THUNDER

She stole the spotlight, she effectively shut down the SOTU even though it went on, look at what the MSM is focusing on.

I would rather have the MSM making this an issue than to be stroking *'s SOTU speech.

Yes I know the MSM is on this for the wrong reasons but once again it brings back into the center spotlight of what is at issue here(Iraq War and needless deaths).

Fucking brilliant if you ask me. 2X's this lady has made an impact by mere simple protest and 2x's now she has rallied the base and stirred the hornets nest.

85,000 people on DU and imagine if we had 10% of that do what she did - imagine....

1. I'm not sure it was intentional, poor thing
I think she was just wearing the same tshirt all day. I don't think she expected them to have a hairy cat fit about it.

12. That's what I read, too, over at Brad Blog
Edited on Wed Feb-01-06 12:29 AM by txindy
She'd been wearing it all day and didn't even want to go to the SOTU, but went, anyway. Then the police arrested her and turned her shirt into a national incident. The whole world is going to know about this. The morning shows are lining up to interview her.

What an unbelievable screwup by security. They prevented nothing and created a media frenzy. Well done! :toast:

18. Her own words from DailyKos
She indeed didn't really intend for it to happen. But that for me makes it that much more poignant than a planned protest.

"My ticket was in the 5th gallery, front row, fourth seat in. The person who in a few minutes was to arrest me, helped me to my seat.
I had just sat down and I was warm from climbing 3 flights of stairs back up from the bathroom so I unzipped my jacket. I turned to the right to take my left arm out, when the same officer saw my shirt and yelled; "Protester." He then ran over to me, hauled me out of my seat and roughly (with my hands behind my back) shoved me up the stairs. I said something like "I'm going, do you have to be so rough?" By the way, his name is Mike Weight.

The officer ran with me to the elevators yelling at everyone to move out of the way. When we got to the elevators, he cuffed me and took me outside to await a squad car. On the way out, someone behind me said, "That's Cindy Sheehan." At which point the officer who arrested me said: "Take these steps slowly." I said, "You didn't care about being careful when you were dragging me up the other steps." He said, "That's because you were protesting."  Wow, I get hauled out of the People's House because I was, "Protesting."

I was never told that I couldn't wear that shirt into the Congress. I was never asked to take it off or zip my jacket back up. If I had been asked to do any of those things...I would have, and written about the suppression of my freedom of speech later. I was immediately, and roughly (I have the bruises and muscle spasms to prove it) hauled off and arrested for "unlawful conduct."

DU comes up with the best descriptors! What a great visual! A bunch of suited and coiffed media times shortcircuiting like Garfield in one of his fights.

8. words are protected speech

What exactly did she do?
What was the probable cause?
Was it a "banner", the words/numbers on her shirt, and/or the way she was dressed?

I wear shirts to public meetings of governing bodies.
Often those shirts have words on them addressing issues being specifically addressed by the governing body.
In some governing bodies, where posters and banners have been banned, this is my way of petitioning the government.
I believe the words on my shirt are protected speech.

10. You're right...
She stole Little Lord Chimpypants thunder...

I support Sheehan in all that she does.
When I read these words she spoke last year - I knew I'd always support her. She's been an outstanding thorn in the Dumbest Dictator's side.

"Hard work is seeing your son's murder on CNN one Sunday evening while you're enjoying the last supper you'll ever truly enjoy again. Hard work is having three military officers come to your house a few hours later to confirm the aforementioned murder of your son, your first-born, your kind and gentle sweet baby. Hard work is burying your child 46 days before his 25th birthday. Hard work is holding your other three children as they lower the body of their big (brother) into the ground. Hard work is not jumping in the grave with him and having the earth cover you both," she said.

"We're watching you very carefully and we're going to do everything in our power to have you impeached for misleading the American people," she said, quoting a letter she sent to the White House. "Beating a political stake in your black heart will be the fulfillment of my life ...

16. not only attention to the number of war dead, but . . .
also attention to BushCo's complete disregard of First Amendment rights . . . (he's working on the other nine in the Bill of Rights, too) . . .

unlike the corporate press, Cindy tried to get the truth out to the American people . . truth about the number of American casualties in Iraq (which the press is ignoring), and truth about BushCo's complete disdain for First Amendment rights (which the press is also ignoring) . . . if she doesn't do it, who will? . . . the Congress? . . . the press? . . .

and she shifted the focus from Bush to where it belongs -- the reality of what's happening in Iraq and in the United States . . . if she didn't completely shift the media's focus from the SOTU, she at least forced them to split it some . . .

we are facing national and global crises of historic proportions . . .
if Cindy helped to awaken just a few more people, she accomplished a hell of a lot more than she would have sitting on her hands and politely listening to more lies from the scum who got her son killed . . .

Bravo, Cindy! . . .

22. Bad move on the part of Capital Police
Had they just let her sit there and directed the cameras not to show her (which we know that they could have, that would have been the end of the story.

Instead, they have brought more attention to her than she could have imagined. Especially, when MSM report the story so erroneously. First telling us that she unfurled a banner and then you find out that it was a t-shirt with the number of our troops who have been killed.

This will backfire on them big time. I am looking forward to seeing Cindy on the morning shows.
