UNITED NATIONS — In his farewell address as United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Annan fired a series of broadsides at the United States on Monday, charging the country under its current leadership has lost its moral compass.
"This country has historically been in the vanguard of the global human-rights movement," Annan said. "But that lead can only be maintained if America remains true to its principles, including in the struggle against terrorism."
It is rare for a UN chief to single out a member UN state for major criticism, but Annan completes his second and final five-year term at the world body's helm at the end of the year. Delivering his attack at the library of former U.S. president Harry S. Truman, Annan compared that leader's global vision as he oversaw the creation of the UN to that of President George W. Bush — concluding Bush is no Harry Truman.
In particular, Annan charged the United States under Bush has trampled over the rights of other countries and individuals in the name of combatting terrorism.
