Oregon Republican explains why he no longer supports Iraq war

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. Gordon Smith, the Oregon Republican who said he no longer supports U.S. involvement in Iraq during an impassioned speech on the Senate floor last week, told CNN Monday he reached his conclusion because Iraq has descended into a "civil war" that U.S. troops will not be able to stop.

"You know, this is a fight, when you get right down to the root of it, between Sunnis and Shias that goes back a millennia of time over who is the rightful successor to the Prophet Mohammed," Smith told Wolf Blitzer in an interview set to air on "The Situation Room." "That is not our fault. That is not our fight, and that's not something we can fix."

Smith said he felt compelled to speak out because "sacrifices are being made in pursuit of a policy that cannot succeed."

"We need to admit it and readjust in a way that the American people and our soldiers find worth the sacrifice."

2. Okay Gordo what are you gonna do about it
I must admit, despite his lateness, it is probably the best lines spoken by a republican in a long, long time. But words ain't keeping our kids from getting killed Gordo. There must be some polling data in Oregon which states support for the war equals political suicide.

4. Bush opened Pandora's Box here.
It was wrapped up, contained... but he just couldn't resist tugging at the bow.

The rest of us seemed to know all about this before we even went into this misbegotten war. That's why we screamed NOT TO DO IT!

6. He's testing the water by jumping off the U.S.S. Dumbya.
I had the pleasure of voting against him twice when I lived in Oregon.

9. 180 degree turn worthy of circa 1930 comintern idiocy.
We've gone from pottery barn bullshit of "we broke it we own it" to "hey its not my fault the place is a mess". Wow. And without even blinking an eye.

And next week is it about face again?
