Obama sounds too much like Osama...
and his middle name is Hussein...

I can see the rightwing having a field day with this one...

But besides THAT, he is certainly a gifted speaker. I'm afraid the racism of the US would still prevent him from becoming the POTUS.

1. I'd hope they make an issue with that.
Because swing voters hearing that would be incredulous and sympathize with Obama.

...black, too, but that shoudn't stop him from going for the brass ring and those of us who support him, helping him reach for it.

26. I heard a good quote from Obama the other day
when asked at a press conference about people who wouldn't vote for him because he was black. He said something to the effect of "The sort of people who wouldn't vote for me because of my race, wouldn't vote for me anyway because of my politics". I think that's a very accurate statement.

40. Cheers for you ~ Obama Rocks

This is America and if he wants to run he can Run.

And if America doesn't like his name, so be it.

He has as much chance to catch the Brass ring as any of the others running.

30. You need to get used to the fact that no matter WHO the Dems pick
the republicans will find some stupid shit to criticize - even if they have to make it up. Remember Swiftboat? Whitewater? The Dean scream? Need I go on?

The fact is, whoever we nominate had better be able to deal with this kind of thing. If Obama can't handle some stupid petty shit like this he doesn't deserve to be the candidate. That goes the same for whoever our nominee is. In fact, my primary criteria for who I decide to support will be their ability to handle the rw outrage apparatus.

23. You're reminding me of that moment in grade school when all the boys figured out
that "bush" was a slang term for something they were not supposed to know or talk about. Of course, the moment they did, "bush" was the only word they used with each other, all day long, every day. They would call each other "Bush." They would yell "BUSH!" to try to shock teachers. They would drink orange drink from cartons passed out to us on the school bus on a field trip and write on the side of the carton "BUSH" and tell each other that they were drinking "bush."

I admit that back then, if you had told me there was going to be not one, but two, President Bushes, I would have been pretty surprised. I would have wondered how my classmates, as grown men of the future, could possibly vote for either of them with a straight face. Because in about fifth grade, "bush" was that dirty word all the boys used, that they thought was so hilarious, that the girls did not even understand their reason for using.

However, thankfully, fifth graders do not get to vote.

America, and Americans, should be mature enough to not give a damn what a person's name is when considering a potential president. And if certain elements are going to try to exploit the fact that Obama's middle name is Hussein or that his last name is close to Osama, I think it's going to backfire, because it's going to sound as stupid as the boys in my school would have if they grew to be men and were still snickering like Beavis and Butt-head about voting for someone named "Bush."

13. Jeff Greenfield just did the most nasty commentary of Obama.
Because he wears tieless shirt likens him to the president of Iran? Because he has a middle eastern sounding name he is somehow deficient? Never mind the fact that he was named 45 years ago, long before Hussein was in power. This editorial opinion by Greenfield was uncalled for. CNN drives me nuts. Wolfie blathers on and on. I may just turn them off altogether.

31. I'm more worried about how quickly the corporate establishment has embraced him
and vice-versa.

I like the guy.. and I think he's going places. But I don't think he's ready for the top of the '08 ticket, and frankly I'm a little leery of the fact that he's being floated as the corporate media-approved "alternative" to the corporate-media approved Hillary. I call bullshit.

The REAL alternative -the one who will kick ass if he runs- scares the bejeebus piss out of them.

in 2008 America will be willing to vote for somebody named Hitler Mussolini Stalin Bin Laden, as long as he ain't a Republican. THEY know it, and it scares the bejeebus out of them, so expect it to go on for a while. They are terrified. Not only is their little King Bunnypants going to be crucified and humiliated, but riding a national wave of adoration and respect is <gasp> a brown person.

Edited on Mon Dec-11-06 06:52 PM by MyPetRock
is that as a child he attended Christian AND Muslim schools. He is a Christian, but you know where I'm going with this. The wingnuts see this guy, with Muslim imagery all over his history and name, as their dream Dem candidate. It ain't fair, but I fear for our chances in 2008 if he's the nominee. I'm even concerned if he's the VP nominee.

If he is our nominee I'll work tooth and nail to get him elected. But I think it's irrational not to consider negatives regarding all our potential candidates.

I really, really like Obama, but I am concerned about him getting the nomination.

38. I don't think his name and that other stuff would be a big problem in the general election.
That said, I *don't* think he should be the nominee for 2008. I'll take Al Gore, or failing that, Wes Clark. Obama might be ready for the #2 slot, but not the top of the ticket.

39. I believe he can overcome these obstacles.
He is so likable, and sincere - I think he will be able to embrace the people the way that Bobby Kennedy did. He won't get the racists votes, anyway...even if he was white, those votes go to the republicans.

My mother is in her early 70's and although I would never call her a racist, she comes from a time where the mindset was different. She was raised by a very racist father and some of that rears it's ugly head. For example she will say the word "colored", or she'll say she worries about the children from a multi-racial couple. I cringe and carefully correct.

She has made all positive comments about Obama...she saw him on Oprah, and has seen his face in the news lately and she really likes what she sees, and said if he runs she will vote for him. She is a good bell weather.

The trouble will be the republican attack machine.
