Soy Products -- The Devil's Food (and makes you gay, too)
There's a slow poison out there that's severely damaging our children and threatening to tear apart our culture. The ironic part is, it's a "health food," one of our most popular.

snip
The dangerous food I'm speaking of is soy. Soybean products are feminizing, and they're all over the place. You can hardly escape them anymore.

I have nothing against an occasional soy snack. Soy is nutritious and contains lots of good things. Unfortunately, when you eat or drink a lot of soy stuff, you're also getting substantial quantities of estrogens.

Estrogens are female hormones. If you're a woman, you're flooding your system with a substance it can't handle in surplus. If you're a man, you're suppressing your masculinity and stimulating your "female side," physically and mentally.

more shit

Soy is feminizing, and commonly leads to a decrease in the size of the penis, sexual confusion and homosexuality. That's why most of the medical (not socio-spiritual) blame for today's rise in homosexuality must fall upon the rise in soy formula and other soy products. (Most babies are bottle-fed during some part of their infancy, and one-fourth of them are getting soy milk!) Homosexuals often argue that their homosexuality is inborn because "I can't remember a time when I wasn't homosexual." No, homosexuality is always deviant. But now many of them can truthfully say that they can't remember a time when excess estrogen wasn't influencing them.

2. WOW!
That explains SO much! I began eating a primarily vegetarian diet in my early 20s. Little did I know that all that soy was TURNING ME GAY!!! OMG! What's the solution? Eat lots of red meat? Drink blood? Surely there must be some way to counteract the effects of what amounts to a Weapon of Mass Homosexualizing. It's like a big multicolored gay bean and gas bomb!

South Park Toy Store Owner: Excuse me, I was just asking you what you're up to with these toys.
Chinpokomon Executive: Nothing, we are very simple people with very small penis. Mr. Hosik's penis is especially small!
Mr. Hosik: So small.
Chinpokomon Executive: We cannot achieve so much with such small penis, but you American wow, penis so big, so big penis!

5. So I am becoming a soy-powered boy toy?
I drink soy juice (not milk, as pointed out by Lewis Black) every day and it's great stuff. I have it on my cereal, in my protein drinks and drink it by the glass.

What about soy sauce? Will too much Chinese food turn me into a gay man too?

I feel my lesbian tendencies starting to overpower me....

Gee I wonder why he doesn't actually provide references from peer reviewed scientific journals for his claims? Oh, that's because it's bullshit. He says soy is in 60% of refined foods. Well then don't eat them, they usually have way too much sugar, salt, etc. in them anyway. Obesity is because of soy? Right.

My girlfriend would by very surprised to learn that thanks to soy, I'm actually gay and under-endowed. To think that a mere change in diet could stop the penile atrophy and feminine urges I suffer through so stoically. :P

I say this, of course, as I eat a lemon-pepper seasoned soy-based chicken substitute, served over soy pasta with soy sauce sprinkled sparingly over the top (and no, I'm not joking. . . about the meal, the penile atrophy was a joke :))

11. Actually . . .
. . . ignoring the absurd parts of this talking about feminizing and such, there are real arguments for avoiding eating way too much *unfermented* soy products such as tofu and soy milk. Especially in America, we have this idea that if a little is good (true with soy) than a whole lot is better (not true with unfermented soy). Soy can slow down the thyroid and possibly cause goiters. It also is high in estrogen-like phytochemicals. When soy is fermented in a traditional manner as in real soy sauce (not the chemical version found in restaurants and grocery stores), real Miso, and Tempeh, the possible dangers are dramatically decreased. I spent a lot of time in China, and there soy is a side dish, often just a small slice of it with some sesame oil on top, or a dish eaten as part of a larger meal. It's very rare in my experience to see the potentially huge quantities of soy eaten in Asia that I've seen people eat here. For example, traditionally, edame is eaten as a very small side dish in Japan (or in sushi restaurants here). I doubt that you'd see a Japanese person buy a two pound bag of it at the local Trader's and down it all in an evening like popcorn - every night - like I've seen done by people here.

A little is good, a lot is not better.

You can get a lot of info about this by googling "dangers soy". Some is good, some is tin foil hat. Final judgment is still out.

14. Totally agree
I have a thyroid problem and before it was diagnosed a nutritionist told me to eat as much soy as possible because that would help me lose weight. OMG the damage it must have done, slowing my thyroid down even more...set me back months if not years in my recovery.

I don't agree with this rabid article of course, but I do believe we should learn much more about hormones (male and female) than we already know. (For instance, I found out the hard way that the level of ignorance in the medical community about thyroid and metabolism issues is astounding.)

25. you might want to read up a bit more on this.....
". . . Although a concern about soy and thyroid function may be news to many vegans, it has actually been a focus of research for more than 70 years. 6 Between 1951 and 1961, this research took on a special importance when about 10 cases of goiter were diagnosed in infants who had been fed infant formula made from soy flour. These old studies form some of the basis for arguments that soy is dangerous for infants. However, the situation for today's soy formula-fed infant is very different. Since the 1960's, soy-based infant formula has been made from soy protein isolate (which does not contain the goitrogens component; soy flour formulas did) and it is fortified with iodine. No cases of goiter have been diagnosed in infants fed this formula in the past 40 years.

Nor is there any evidence that consuming soy causes thyroid problems in healthy, well-nourished people who have adequate iodine in their diet. . 7-10 However, it is possible that eating a diet with generous amounts of soyfoods could be a problem for people whose iodine intake is marginal. And that might just include some vegans, since the main sources of iodine in western diets are fish and milk. But the appropriate response to this is not to limit healthful soyfoods; it's to get enough iodine. Vegetables have varying amounts of iodine depending on where they are grown. In some parts of the world--specifically northern Europe--vegans may have low intakes of iodine. Foods that can supply iodine to vegan diets are sea vegetables, although contents vary quite a bit. Fortified foods are also a good source. Iodized salt is about the most reliable source. Vegans should be sure that, when they season foods with salt, it is iodized. If this isn't a regular part of your diet, use an iodine supplement.

CONCLUSION: Soyfoods may contain goitrogenic compounds as do other foods. There is no evidence that eating soyfoods regularly causes thyroid problems in people who eat a balanced diet. Vegans should make an effort to include adequate sources of iodine in their diet.

Three recent human studies confirm that soy consumption does not harm thyroid function. Rates of hypothyroidism are not higher In Asian countries with a soy-rich diet versus Western countries. The FDA has not issued any warnings for soy consumption and adverse health effects.

37. Thanks for that
However, the key element of that clip is "Nor is there any evidence that consuming soy causes thyroid problems in healthy, well-nourished people who have adequate iodine in their diet." Unfortunately, those of us with thyroid problems have to operate under different parameters--in this case, soy = poison.

Exactly.

The problem is, people read "soy is bad for the thyroid" and believe that and pass it on without any type of clarification.

It's like saying "sugar is bad for you" and leaving out the "if you're a diabetic" part.

20. People need to educate themselves on the properties of plant
foods, period. Not only can too much soy have undesired effects but people abuse herbal remedies as well. The abuse of Ephedra, which I used to use as a mild tea to calm my asthma, caused it to be banned in many places. People get the idea that because it's natural it's safe. Many plant foods need to be used judiciously, some can even be poisonous to certain people, like those who have peanut allergies. Remember tobacco, Oleander, digitalis and opium poppies are all plants.

Which products and segments of society has this guy attacked before?

I think this might make it in to someone's comedy routine.

Now I'm going to want to know what scientists are going to say.

Imagine this scene - a team of scientists are working for a revered scientific institute studying the physical and gene properties of the soybean and by-products. One is a homosexual, another is a homophobe. Down the street, a high-up employee of the FDA is having lunch with a soybean lobbyist and in a town across the state line, a major food/chemical corporation is studying how to make the bean square and indestructable.

What comes out of that?

Are edame beans safe?

They are soy-based. I gave them a try after years of buying expensive, name brand, department store only facial moisturizers. I read a recommendation in a magazine (can't recall which) and decided to give it a try. I've been a fan ever since. My skin feels and looks great. Now I use the night cream and body/hand lotion as well.

I also love edamame. A great, healthy snack.

I once had the Soybean Assoc. as a client and they gave me some odd soybean stuff. I have a stuffed soybean, his name is Stinky and he has a twin named Soggy - (my interns named them), and they have traveled all over the US and the world. Here is Stinky on vacation in Mexico and violating US law by smoking a Cuban cigar:

or perhaps it masculinizes females while feminizing males. Seems after a generation or two...we all just switch places or how bout this, we will eventually all be very feminine women. Wow.

Does anyone who writes and supports this crap ever think what they say all the way through? This blows their own stereotypes of femininity and masculinity out of the water. So, it feminizes men to turn them gay..what does it do to women? Make them more feminine and gay? Ludicrous.

Today's Answer (Published 11/10/2003)

When you consider that millions of men in China, Japan and other Asian countries have had soy
foods in their daily diets from earliest childhood, you can appreciate that the plant estrogens
they contain

feminizing effects at all. Given the huge populations of Asian countries there's no reason to think
that soy affects male fertility, either.

However, concerns in the Western world about the effects on boys and men from eating soy foods have
been raised repeatedly and addressed in numerous laboratory and population studies. Researchers at
the University of Pennsylvania surveyed men and women who, as babies, were

or hormonal problems; they were then compared to a matched group raised on cow's milk formula. The
only discrepancies noted were some minor menstrual complaints among the women (their periods lasted
one-third of a day longer and they reported slightly more menstrual pain). Results were published in
the August 15, 2001, issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

In March 2002 the Journal of Nutrition published results of a survey of men consuming soy foods or
supplements containing 40-70 milligrams of isoflavones (the phytogenic components). None of the
studies showed that consuming soy had any effects on reproductive hormones or semen quality, both
changes that you might expect to see before any overt "feminization" would occur.

Including soy foods in your diet may enhance your health and help protect against heart disease and
prostate cancer. I recommend two servings per day of such soy foods as tofu, tempeh (soy protein),
soy milk or edamame. That would add up to about 40 milligrams of isoflavones, less than the amount
consumed in the traditional Asian diet. The earlier in life one begins to consume soy, the greater
the protection against breast and prostate cancer seems to be.

46. I challenge the author to an arm wrestling contest
He can show me how supressed my vegan gym-rat masculinity really is. I eat lots of soy, much in tofu form.

51. I have to agree with this assessment
After all, my daughter calls soybeans "Eat your Mommy" (edamame). So maybe there's something to this.
