Skilling wins delay of sentence
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/12/business/12Skilling.html

Jeffrey K. Skilling, the former Enron chief executive who was sentenced to 24 years in prison for his role in a fraud that destroyed the company, won a last-minute delay of his sentence, scheduled to begin Tuesday.

The United States Court of Appeals in New Orleans issued on Monday a delay of the order requiring Mr. Skilling, 53, who was convicted in May of securities fraud and conspiracy, to report to federal prison, according to court records.

“This order is entered solely to allow court to give careful consideration to the request for bail pending appeal,” the court said. Mr. Skilling was to arrive at the low-security Federal Correctional Institution in Waseca, Minn., Tuesday afternoon. A Justice Department spokeswoman, Jaclyn Lesch, did not immediately return after-hours calls seeking comment.

Mr. Skilling, who said he was made a scapegoat, is seeking to remain free on bail while he appeals his conviction. Enron’s founder, Kenneth L. Lay, was convicted along with Mr. Skilling but died in July before he could be sentenced.

4. If he were a poor Black person, he'd be in prison, period.

Call me cynical, but I wouldn't say that if I didn't believe the statistics were true. There appears to be a separate law for rich people than there is for poor people.

6. I agree
More from the article...

Mr. Skilling is under house arrest in his 9,215-square-foot Mediterranean mansion in Houston’s River Oaks section.

The house, valued on tax rolls at more than $5 million, will be sold to help him pay $45 million in court-ordered restitution to his victims. He can give half the proceeds from the sale to his three children.

...

So he steals $45 million and he has to stay in his Mediterranean mansion as punishment?
