Poll question: A bird flew into my window pane and died. Am I a hypocrite for not removing all glass from my home? |
|
I respect all life. How far do we go?

Are vegetarians morally obliged to avoid the use of pesticides?

3. You're a hypocrite because you allow birds to fly into windows... |
|
but you're not willing to throw small birds into windows personally.

12. Do you know how hard that is? |
|
Even if you can catch a live bird, when you throw them at the window, they simply fly away.

Do you AT LEAST put the sillouhettes of attack birds on your windows???

We'll expect you mylar the outside of your windows and install silhouettes of attack birds on all of your windows!
And, as partial atonement for the fact that a one of your windows took the life of a bird, you MUST mail a substantial contribution to the Audobon Society!
IMMEDIATELY!

5. Nope, just do as my mother did. |

Hang stuff or stick stuff to the windows and they will avoid hitting it.

10. This reminds me of something that happened to me. I found a praying mantis in my |
|
kitchen by the window. I gently captured it and let it fly away just outside of my front door. As it flew away, a bird swept down and gobbled it up. I am still upset by this when I think about it.

11. No, I look at it as "Natural Selection" or you could take the Buddhist view... |
|
...and think that you just moved that poor bird one step closer to it's ultimate rebirth as a Human being.
OR maybe it was a suicide? I always wonder about that when I see an animal run out into the street and get killed, could the animal have planned it? Probably not, but you just don't know.

I was parked at a stop light in St. Louis when a cardinal flew out of a tree, crashed into my motionless car, and died right there.
I couldn't decide if it was a sign or if cardinals are basically retarded.

13. Well, if you are serious... |

If one held a deep respect for all life, then I suppose one should avoid creating death traps. If this was an isolated incident, then maybe that was just bird that was dumber than average. But some building, for whatever reason, this happens repeatedly. I think in a case like that, one should put up silhouettes of predators.
Counterpoint: You simply can't hold a consistent belief of respect for "all life". At some point you need to decide which lives are more important than others. Washing your hands kills live bacteria, but I assume you value your health and quality of life above the life of the bacteria.

I was not serious -- this thread was a parody of another poll.
However, your points are well taken.

You should destroy your house because it must be built in a path the birds desire to use for flight, and of course the birds right to fly outweighs your right to a comfy house that is probably destroying their ecosystem anyway. How could you live with yourself? Now the sad thing is I actually do have to add the :sarcasm: or there will be people agreeing with me.
