Why McCain will be hard to beat in '08.
The short reason is because of the Main Stream Media's love of him as a (so called) "straight talker." The longer reason is because McCain can put on an excellent show of being a thoughtful, intelligent, caring, humane man who spent six years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam.

If someone like John Kerry had spent those six years as a prisoner, the wingnut pundits would tell us he was brain washed and sent back here to seize the presidency (as in "The Manchurian Candidate").

So here's my suggestion for beating McCain no matter who the Dems put up against him. That photo of him hugging King George. How can McCain ignore the first race he ran against Bush when, in the South Carolina primary, the Bush thugs put out propaganda about McCain having a black child? And then, four years later, McCain hugs Bush as though he represented the second coming?

That photo reminded me of Sammy Davis Jr., one of the most popular entertainers in the country by anyone's standards, hugging Richard Nixon in exactly the same way at a Republican convention. After that, most people regarded Sammy Davis Jr. as a joke.

One could only wish that the picture of McCain hugging Bush would produce the same reaction. However, I worry that Sammy Davis Jr. received the treatment he got because he was black. McCain, who deserves the same scorn, is white, and therefore it might be treated as acceptable today by too many morons who just don't (and never will) "get it."

1. I don't think McCain will get the nomination.
Too many negatives for the GOP base to give it to him. I'll say it now, Sam Brownback will be the nominee.

3. Holy cow - were you reading my mind?
I just posted my response at the same time as you, and we both came to the same conclusion - Brownback.

I'd love to see Brownback win the GOP nomination, it would practically ensure us the win in '08.

18. I mostly agree.
It's the far right that dominates the Repub primaries, and they won't let someone as "liberal" as McCain sneak through. I'm not sure if it'll be Brownback, though it wouldn't surprise me, but I'm quite sure that none of the "frontrunners" like McCain or Giuliani could survive. Even Romney is pretty much DOA after the letter in which he endorsed full gay rights.

2. The Rethugs will beat him for us
I don't know a single rethug who likes McCain. They hate him because he's too "liberal" for them. "Mainstream" voters might like McCain, but it's the far-right who usually shows up to vote in the primaries, and they'll make sure he doesn't get the nod. Same goes for Guliani. Chances are, they'll nominate some blowhard like Brownback.

4. He's 'holier than thou', ill-tempered, and a flip flopper. The media will tire of him.
He will not get the nomination.

12. The media will "tire of him" they haven't for six years
they were boosting him in 2000 and his "straight talk" and still doing it today.

5. McCain's advising putting more troops in Iraq.
Bush may actually do that. That will only compound what is already a disaster. McCain will look like an ass.

6. The press loved him in 2000
They had him pegged as the front runner before the primaries. He had the same "straight talker" rep back then. It didn't work. The Republican base was suspicious of him. Don't see it being much different this time.

Plus, now he has a record of voting in support of Bush (no matter how he tries to appear). This will cost him votes among the more moderate Rs.

7. That straight-talker is really an easily provable flip-flopper.
And the Dems better not be afraid to play that card.

and Romney. imo McCain is losing the independents and thats the group he needs to have to win.

9. What If He's The Incumbent?
If Dick resigns, could King george annoint him VP?

Then, if King george is impeached, McCain would automatically take over the spot, a la Gerald Ford.

19. * Is Still A Politico
If Dick were to leave, which by no means is destined, King george would want to put someone in who had a shot at the '08 nomination.

His list is pretty short. He could put in someone like Rice, or else he could cozy up to John, and do it for the sake of the '08 election.

11. I agree that he will be tough, thanks to his huge support among indies
but he isn't unbeatable. His support for more troops in Iraq could be his undoing. He's a big hawk on Iraq.

13. He said...
That Americans wouldn't pick lettuce for $50 an hour. That will haunt him...because I and every single person I know would be thrilled to pick lettuce for $50 an hour. It's also an indication of his stance on illegal immigration, which will not please middle america.

He's also a flip flopper, particularly on the (not)religious right. He didn't stand up for his wife and child in the 2000 primaries in South Carolina (and most people know that story, even up here in rural, red North Carolina).

He's got a nasty temper too, doesn't he? I think he could be egged into losing it, thereby embarrassing himself quite nicely.

16. I agree. That few seconds of Bush worship
cost him the nomination and the chance for the presidency.
And that's a good thing.

21. Great Stuff
Great post!! I could not agree more. The Democrats need to define McCain this photo is a great start. The Democrats need to tie him so close to Bush that he is seen as W's GOP successor. The media, as mentioned in the initial post, will not do it the Dems need to.
Anyone got the photo od them eating cake as New Orleans drowned, this is another good example of how to take McCain out.

23. McCain in 2008 is not the McCain of 2000 - His Appeal to Dems/Indies is Gone
His appeal was to Democrats and Independents.

Democrats in NH switched party alliances to vote for McCain in the republican primary. They loved his straight talk express.

Those Democrats would never do that again.

McCain's appeal was across party lines. He will never get thru the primary.
