It is Polish...Peter Pace (PAH-chay). Why is he called Peter PACE instead of using his actual family name?

Okay...back to the usual bitching now.

:hi:

2. I'm still trying to work out why Colin Powell couldn't pronounce his own name.
Edited on Tue Dec-12-06 06:23 PM by Kutjara
It's "Colin" with a short "o" sound and an "i", not "Colon".

And as for Dionne Warwick: for God's sake woman, the second "w" is silent!

I think I'll go and have a little nap now.

4. Heh -- I know where you're coming from
I'm sure every ethnicity has these types of things. Right now, the insistence on calling James Baker the Bush "ConsiGlyairee" (instead of pronouncing it "Conselyeri") drives me up a tree.

Kind of like when people order one "panini". (It's paninO, dammit!)

5. He's Italian
Pace, pronounced as you say, means "peace" in Italian. Its too ironic.

7. I swear I though I read it was Polish
Wikepedia says "Pace was born in Brooklyn, New York to Italian-American parents, but I trust Wiki about as far as I can edit it. Besides, I swear it was in the Sunday newspaper supplement that I saw that he was actually POLISH.

And why shouldn't I be addressing him in anything but expletives?

9. I've heard him interviewed a good many times,
and have never heard him correct anyone. If it doesn't bother him, why does it bother you?

10. That might be the way it is supposed to be pronounced
but that isn't the way he pronounces it. It would get pretty tiring to correct everyone who read your name and called you pace.

11. They should follow the General's way of saying it.

Like my German teacher said about the Germans who would "correct" my pronounciation of my name. It's very rude. It's your name and you can pronounce it any way you choose. Of course it does irritate me sometimes, also. I hate all the "steens" instead of steins".

13. My brother's last name is Italian.
He doesn't try to pronounce it in Italian.

Actually, it's been through Ellis Island, so while it's Italian, there aren't any Italians apart from his family (and one other immigrant whose name was identically mangled) with that surname.

Were "Pace" Polish, and spelled that way, it woud be PAH-tseh. For something like "PAH-chay" you'd need Pacze or Pacie.

14. I like George Carlin's approach
You can pronounce your own name any goddam way you want..."Yes sir, it's spelled Prszxqyzos...SMITH."

All you people asking why I care...lighten up. It should be obvious I don't really care. I mean, did my op really sound that deep and affected? It was just something else besides non-stop Obama and "Bush is an idiot."

Just a change of pah-chay...er, pace.
