I just heard that on ABC news. WTF? Some ex- General Keane has recommended it and said the 40,000 could "secure Baghdad"? What the hell is he smoking and sharing with the chimp?

:argh:

1. Are you sure that's not "McCain"? That's HIS idea
WH is just going to let the leaks (trial balloons?) drip from now until the new year ... while our troops continue in harm's way.

:wtf:

13. Oh this idea is in there: the B/H group calls them "advisors" and "trainers"
but you know Bu$hco just sees that as code for more combat troops.

9. The generals in Iraq disagree with this idea.
They say that this will just delay forcing the Iraqi military to stand up.

10. I bet he'll say he's taking this "idea" from the B/H report, combat troops disguised as "advisors"
and "trainers" just like the report recommends for Iraq asap. Shades of Vietnam redux.

I shudder to think where he will find these troops but I've said all along that this is what he will do - more troops. This 'war' is only gettng bigger by any means Bu$hco can devise.

21. Let's go back to November.
A few of the DUers who watch such things noticed Prince Turki beginning a public relations campaign. Then we saw that old Dick Cheney went to Riyadh; reports indicated he had been "summoned" by the "Royal Family." They want the US to "disarm" the Mahdi army, which is the largest militia and most powerful domestic military force in Iraq. It is an estimated 60,000 strong, and tends to follow the leadership of Muqtada al-Sadr.

Then his honesty the president, George W., went to meet with al-Maliki. Administration officials let it be known they wanted his support in going after the al-Sadr forces. But al-Maliki serves largely because of al-Sadr's support. The Iraqi leader was not agreeing to the Bush plan, and thus the Hadley memo was "leaked" to the paper -- saying that Hadley (meaning Cheney) didn't think he was meeting US expectations. Well, al-Maliki then refused to meet as scheduled with Bush, and the next day's breakfast meeting was visibly uncomfortable.

Saudi "security expert" Nawaf Obaid had an op-ed in the Washington Post about a week ago, saying the Saudis feared an "ethnic cleansing" if the US withdrew troops. The Saudis, of course, back the Sunnis, while al-Sadr fronts for Iran in representing Shi'ites. More, it has been confirmed the Saudis are supportng the Sunnis in Iraq, which would include those engaged in actions against our military.

The idea of a "surge," which has also been mentioned by republican members of the Baker group, indicates support for a plan for a significant US military build-up, in order to fight the Madhi militia.

We are entering a dangerous phase of this war. It could easily become a more deadly regional conflict. The idea that more violence is the key to victory is irrational, and hence appeals to George W. Bush.

25. omg
that is just too horrible to contemplate. Yet it is totally plausible with these bloodthirsty war freaks. :(

Thank you for the review of events H20Man. I have read bits and pieces over the last few weeks and given the Saudi/Iraq Sunni new alliance I suspected big trouble. This is Big BIG Trouble. The longer the US stays the worse it will get.

27. "bits and pieces"
I like that -- because it is exactly what the corporate media provides: bits and pieces. It is good that we have DU to have good minds working together to put those fragments into a proper sequence, and so they begin to come into focus.

You are correct about "big trouble." As bad as the Baker-Hamilton report is, it is at least accurate in stating that there is not a military solution. The threat of increasing violence can only spin events further out of control. There are few examples in human history that will make clearer that human beings do not control violence at this level .... quite the opposite.

18. This could get scary, he realizes he has screwed everything up including
this war the most. Sending in more troops is not going to win this militarily. The active duty generals say no more troops needed. Don't understand what the plan is but this may not be good and the whole area could really blow from this.

24. I firmly believe this. Bu$hco will "embed advisors" in with the Iraqi Army (cough)
and these "trainers" (double cough) will lead an attack on Sadr's Army. It will be spun very carefully so as not to unduly alarm the sheeple but since it's going to be another enormous clusterfuck, it's only going to make the region explode as the sectarian violence/civil war will escalate regionally imho.

This proxy war in Iraq between the Saudis (Sunni) and the Iranians (Shia) is entering it's next growth phase, midwifed by the Baker/Hamilton report.

according to the Stanley Karnow scenario, VietNam - A History. I wish PBS would rerun Vietnam, A Television History. The Winter Soldier stuff with Kerry is excellent. Then, the CIA's Phoenix Program begins. Task Force 121 was the name of the DoD's tasked group to do this

http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Task_Force_121

and

http://www.rotten.com/library/conspiracy/task-force-121/

with this interesting tidbit

""Meanwhile, the mandate for Task Force 121 just keeps on getting broader and broader. According to the New Yorker, the administration has been looking at expanding operations into Iran. Based on the same flimsy kind of intelligence that got the U.S. into Iraq in the first place, some in the Bush administration have now determined that Iran is the actual cause of all America's problems in Iraq.""

23. Dear god, it's a power play
McCain suggested it, hoping like hell Bush wouldn't do it, to make himself look tough for the election. Bush has taken the bait, for whatever damn fool reason. Probably because he simply is a damn fool.

I feel so very sad for the guys and gals in Iraq. What a fucking shithole to put our people in for no good reason. I wish they could all be home with their families this Christmas. George's stupid war just goes on forever and ever.

33. He Has Simply Signed On To John McCaves Long Con Against The Dems
- Hold off on plan until Dems control Congress.

- Call for 40,000 more for last big push.

- Wait for either:

a) Dems to defund the war. Blame Dems for 'loss' of Iraq.

b) Dems do nothing. Dems lose their base. Since there are no troops to send, play for time until the sheeple and the 'liberal' media forget about the plan (about two weeks).
